The J Award of 2008 is the fourth annual J Awards, established by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's youth-focused radio station Triple J. The announcement comes at the culmination of Ausmusic Month (November). In 2008, a new award for ''Australian Music Video of the Year'' was added to the existing awards; ''Australian Album of the Year'' and ''Unearthed Artist of the Year''. Robbie Ruck announced the winners on air on 5 December 2008. Who's eligible? Any Australian album released independently or through a record company, or sent to Triple J in consideration for airplay, is eligible for the J Award. The 2008 nominations for ''Australian Album of the Year'' and ''Australian Music Video of the Year'' were selected from releases received by Triple J between December 2007 and November 2008. Bliss n Eso (formerly known as Bliss n' Esoterikizm) are an Australian hip hop trio based in Sydney. They are currently signed to Melbourne record label Illusive Sounds, and are managed and booked by label co-founders Adam Jankie and Matt Gudinski. Bliss n Eso have released six studio albums which include three number 1 debuts on the ARIA Charts. The Herd (Australian Band)
The Herd is an Australian hip hop group formed in Sydney. The group employs a "full band" format and is recognised for its live shows. The Herd is composed of Ozi Batla, Urthboy, Berzerkatron (MCs), Unkle Ho (beats), Traksewt (piano accordion, clarinet and beats), Sulo (beats and guitar), Toe-Fu (guitar), Rok Poshtya (bass) and singer Jane Tyrrell. Havilah (album)
''Havilah '' is the fourth studio album by Australian alternative rockers, the Drones, which was released by ATP Recordings/MGM Distribution in September 2008. It was co-produced by the group with Burke Reid and issued in February 2009 for the United Kingdom and United States markets. The title refers to a biblical town of the same name – "a Shangri-La-esque place with an abundance of gold" – and is the valley from Myrtleford, where they recorded. At the J Awards of 2008, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year. In 2011, it would be voted by the band's contemporaries & "industry experts" as the 38th best Australian album of all time. The Drones (Australian Band)
The Drones were an Australian rock band, formed in Perth by mainstay lead vocalist and guitarist Gareth Liddiard in 1997. Fiona Kitschin, his domestic partner, joined on bass guitar and vocals in 2002. Other long-term members include Rui Pereira on bass guitar and then lead guitar; Mike Noga on drums, vocals, harmonica and percussion; and Dan Luscombe on lead guitar, vocals and keyboards. Their second album, '' Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By'' (April 2005), won the inaugural Australian Music Prize. The Grates
The Grates were an Australian indie rock band that formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 2002. They were brought to national attention in 2004 when a demo of their single "Trampoline" received airplay on radio station Triple J. Their first two albums, ''Gravity Won't Get You High'' (2006) and ''Teeth Lost, Hearts Won'' (2008), both reached the ARIA Albums Chart top 10. Hodgson and Patterson were also proprietors of Southside Tea Room, a cafe and bar, in Morningside; the couple also married in November that year. Sparkadia
Sparkadia is an Australian band, formed in Sydney in 2004. They were originally known as The Spark. The band is brainchild of Alexander Burnett (vocals, guitar) and Dave Hall (drums), the band became a reality with the addition of Nick Rabone (bass) and Josephine Ayling (keyboards, guitar, vocals) in 2006. Eddy Current Suppression Ring (sometimes seen as ECSR) are an Australian rock band formed in 2003.
