JS ''Akizuki'' (DD-115) is the lead ship of Akizuki-class destroyers. She was commissioned on 14 March 2012. Construction and career ''Akizuki'' was laid down at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works on July 17, 2009 as the 2007 plan 5,000-ton type escort ship No. 2244 based on the medium-term defense capability development plan, launched and named on October 13, 2010. Launch, the public trial started on July 28, 2011, commissioned on March 14, 2012, and was incorporated into the 5th escort group of the 1st escort group. The fixed port is Sasebo base. JDS ''Akizuki'' (DD-161) was the lead ship of the destroyer. The vessel was laid down in 1958 and served as a front line warship with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force until 1987, and as an auxiliary until 1993. Development and design ''Teruzuki'' was one of two ''Akizuki''-class destroyers ordered in 1957 by the United States for Japan as part of a Mutual Defense Assistance Act, military aid package. Although the two destroyers were paid for by the United States, and therefore had hull numbers under the US Navy designation scheme, with ''Teruzuki'' having the hull number DD-960, they were built in Japanese shipyards to local designs. Sasebo Naval Arsenal
was one of four principal naval shipyards owned and operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. History The Sasebo Naval District was established at Sasebo, Nagasaki in 1886, as the third of the naval districts responsible for the defense of the Japanese home islands. After the establishment of the navy base, a ship repair facility was established in 1889 with a dry dock. With the addition of equipment and facilities for ship production by 1897, the "Sasebo Shipyards" were officially established, and renamed the "Sasebo Naval Arsenal" in 1903. The RUM-139 VL-ASROC is an anti-submarine missile in the ASROC family, currently built by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Navy.
