Japan Racing Association
The Japan Racing Association ( ja, 日本中央競馬会 Nippon Chūō Keiba Kai, or JRA) is a public company established to operate Chūō Keiba (中央競馬 Central horse racing) and to manage racecourses, betting facilities, and horse-training facilities. It was founded in 1954, according to the Horse Racing Law (競馬法 Keiba Hō) and the Japan Racing Association Law (日本中央競馬会法 Nippon Chūō Keiba Kai Hō) and is operated under the strict oversight of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Japan). JRA Award
The is given annually since 1987 by the Japan Racing Association (JRA) to the outstanding horses and people in Japanese Thoroughbred horse racing. The awards originally started as the in 1954 and since 1972 the {{Nihongo, Yūshun Awards, 優駿賞. The most prestigious award for horses is JRA Award for Horse of the Year. Kane Hekili
Kane Hekili (February 26, 2002 -May 25, 2016) was a Thoroughbred racehorse named after "The Thunder God" in Hawaiian mythology. In 2005 and 2006 he won four Grade 1 races on dirt in Japan and finished fourth to Electrocutionist in the 2006 Dubai World Cup. Kane Hekili was injured after finishing second in the Teio Sho on June 28, 2006. He did not race again for more than twenty-eight months following surgery for a bowed tendon. He returned to racing on November 8, 2008 in the Grade 3 Musashino Stakes, finishing four lengths back of the winner. Entered in the December 7th Japan Cup Dirt, a Grade 1 race he won in 2005, Kane Hekili stunned his rivals and racing fans with a winning performance under French jockey, Christophe Lemaire. Katsuhiko Sumii
(born 28 March 1964, Kanazawa, Ishikawa) is a Japanese horse trainer. He trained the first and second placing horses in the 2006 Melbourne Cup, Delta Blues and Pop Rock. Other notable horses Sumii has trained include Kane Hekili, Vodka, Victoire Pisa, and Epiphaneia. Sumii retired on February 2021 to succeed his mother's work as an active member of the Tenrikyo. Kurofune (horse)
Kurofune (Japanese クロフネ, 31 March 1998 - 17 January 2021) was an American-bred, Japanese-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire who won Grade 1 races on both turf and dirt. He showed promising form as a juvenile in 2000 when he won two of four races and ran third in a very strong edition of the Radio Tampa Hai Sansai Stakes. In the following year he took the Mainichi Hai and the NHK Mile Cup in spring on turf before being switched to dirt racing in late autumn and winning the Musashino Stakes and the Japan Cup Dirt. He won six of his ten races, four of them in track record times, before his track career was ended by injury. After his retirement from racing he became a very successful breeding stallion. Espoir City (Japanese: エスポワールシチー, foaled April 22nd, 2005) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2010 February Stakes. Career Espoir City debuted on March 9, 2008, at Hanshin, where he came in 3rd. He got his first win after six races on July 29, 2008, when he won at Kokura. He then picked up another win at Kokura on August 10, 2008. This sparked a 4 race winstreak. 2009 was a very successful year for Espoir City. He went on a 6 race winstreak. He picked up his first graded win on March 29, 2009, when he won the March Stakes. He then won his first Grade-1 race by winning the May 5th, 2009 Kashiwa Kinen. He won the Mile Championship Nambu Hai on October 12, 2009, and his Grade-1 win, the 2009 Champions Cup in December.
