J. Robert Stassen
J. Robert "Bob" Stassen (August 15, 1927 – October 15, 2015) was an American businessman, Baptist minister, and politician. Early life and education Stassen was born in West St. Paul, Minnesota; his uncle was Harold Stassen, who served as governor of Minnesota. Stassen graduated from South St. Paul High School and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. In 1951, Stassen received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of Minnesota. He received a specialist degree from the Bethel Seminary and attended the William Mitchell College of Law. Career Stassen worked in the life insurance and banking businesses. He was also the president of the West St. Paul State Bank. From 1973 to 1976, Stassen served in the Minnesota Senate as a Republican. The Minnesota Senate is the upper house of the Legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota. At 67 members, half as many as the Minnesota House of Representatives, it is the largest upper house of any U.S. state legislature. James Frank Lord (November 26, 1948 – June 6, 2008) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minnesota state treasurer from 1975 to 1983. Early life and education Born in Chanhassen, Minnesota, Lord was the son of United States District Court Judge Miles Lord. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctor from the William Mitchell College of Law. Career Lord began his career as an aide in the United States Senate for Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale. He also served in the United States Merchant Marine. In the 1970s, he served as a liaison between Governor Wendell R. Anderson's office other government agencies. Lord was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1972 at the age of 23 and served from 1973 to 1975. The state treasurer of Minnesota was a constitutional officer in the executive branch of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Twenty-six individuals occupied the office of state treasurer from 1858 until the office's abolition in 2003. The final state treasurer was Carol C. Johnson, a DFLer. Election and term of office The state treasurer was elected by the people on Election Day in November, and took office on the first Monday of the next January. There was no limit to the number of terms a state treasurer may hold. To be elected state treasurer, a person must have been a qualified voter, permanently resident in the state of Minnesota at least 30 days prior to the election, and at least 21 years of age.
