J. J. Jones (quarterback)
John Eddie "J. J." Jones (April 16, 1952 – July 9, 2009) was an American football quarterback in the National Football League. He was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 1975, the team's first African-American quarterback. He also played with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL from 1976-77. He played college football at Fisk. He had three children. The quarterback (commonly abbreviated "QB"), colloquially known as the "signal caller", is a position in gridiron football. Quarterbacks are members of the offensive platoon and mostly line up directly behind the offensive line. While there have been a growing number of players of African or minority descent throughout the history of collegiate and professional football, black players have historically faced difficulty in landing and retaining quarterback roles due to a number of factors. Fisk University
Fisk University is a private historically black liberal arts college in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1866 and its campus is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1930, Fisk was the first African-American institution to gain accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Accreditations for specialized programs soon followed.
