Ships Of The Royal Navy
''Ships of the Royal Navy'' is a naval history reference work by J. J. Colledge (1908–1997); it provides brief entries on all recorded ships in commission in the Royal Navy from the 15th century, giving location of constructions, date of launch, tonnage, specification and fate. It was published in two volumes by Greenhill Books. Volume 1, first published in 1969, covers major ships; Volume 2, first published in 1970, covers Navy-built trawlers, drifters, tugs and requisitioned ships including Armed Merchant Cruisers. The book is the standard single-volume reference work on ships of the Royal Navy, and Colledge's conventions and spellings of names are used by museums, libraries and archives. The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Although warships were used by English and Scottish kings from the early medieval period, the first major maritime engagements were fought in the Hundred Years' War against France. Henry Trevor Lenton
Henry Trevor Lenton (8 February 1924 – 7 May 2009) was an English naval historian, specialising in the area of 20th-century naval history and warship design. He served in the Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy during World War II before becoming a journalist and author. Life Born in Rangoon, Burma in 1924, Lenton and his family returned to Britain in 1930. He joined the Merchant Navy at age 15 in 1939 and transferred to the Royal Navy Reserve in 1941 as a midshipman. Lenton was promoted to sub-lieutenant by the end of that year and he was a lieutenant aboard the light cruiser in 1944. That same year he volunteered for service in the Royal Indian Navy and was commanding the auxiliary patrol vessel ''Oostkapelle'' in 1945.
