J. Henry Tate
James Henry Tate (March 5, 1830April 18, 1918) was an American merchant, farmer, and Republican Party (United States), Republican politician. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate (29th Wisconsin Legislature, 1876 & 30th Wisconsin Legislature, 1877) and representing Vernon County, Wisconsin, Vernon County. Biography Born in Landgrove, Vermont, where he was raised on his family's farm, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1847 where he was a clerk. In 1849, he moved to California and then back to Boston. In 1860, Tate moved to Rhode Island. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry and was a commissary sergeant. Then, in 1865, Tate settled in Viroqua, Wisconsin, where he owned a store. He also owned another store in Cashton, Wisconsin. Wisconsin's 4th State Senate District
The 4th Senate District of Wisconsin is one of 33 districts in the Wisconsin State Senate. Located in southeast Wisconsin, the district is entirely contained within northern Milwaukee County. It comprises part of the city of Milwaukee's north side, as well as the village of Shorewood, the southern half of the city of Glendale, and part of northern Wauwatosa. The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Cashton, Wisconsin
Cashton is a village in Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,158 at the 2020 census. History The settlement began in 1854 when Thompson Hazen established an inn at a nearby bend in the stagecoach road from Prairie du Chien to Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The location was then known as ''Hazen's Corners''. In 1879, the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad built a branch line from Sparta to Viroqua, Wisconsin through the area, drawing additional settlers. The same year, local merchant William H. H. Cash spearheaded construction of a railroad depot and had the village platted, renaming it ''Cashton''. Viroqua, Wisconsin
Viroqua is the county seat of Vernon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,504 at the 2020 census. The city is in the town of Viroqua. Etymology The town was originally named “Farwell” after Leonard J. Farwell, second Governor of Wisconsin, but it was renamed “Viroqua” in 1854. It is unclear why the name was changed, and the source of the name is uncertain. One legend states that Viroqua was the name of the daughter of Black Hawk, but this is not supported by evidence. Another story attributes the name to a Mohawk Indian actress who performed in a theater on the East Coast or in Brantford, Canada. 2nd Rhode Island Infantry
The 2nd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment composed of volunteers from the state of Rhode Island that served with the Union Army in the American Civil War. They, along with the 1st Rhode Island, wore a very simple uniform. The uniform composed of a dark blue jacket like shirt, tannish grey pants, and a dark blue chasseur kepi. The 2nd Rhode Island also wore havelocks in the beginning of the war, but after finding them useless they discarded them. Overview The 2nd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was organized in June 1861 in Providence. The regiment was initially assigned to the IV Corps of the Army of Northeastern Virginia (later became the Army of the Potomac) and saw its first combat action at the First Battle of Bull Run.
