J. G. Bubb
James George Bubb (1781-1853) was a prolific sculptor in marble and artificial stone of the early Victorian era who is now largely forgotten. His sculptures adorn buildings across the United Kingdom whilst his relief adorning the Italian Opera House in London was the largest undertaken in Great Britain at that time. Early career Born in London the son of Fanny and James Bubb, a tobacconist with a shop on The Strand, he was probably the James George Bubb who was christened at St Martin-in-the-Fields on 23 September 1781. In 1797, aged 15, Bubb was apprenticed to the sculptor John Fontum for seven years. Bubb had a prize-winning beginning at the Royal Academy Schools from 1801 and won a silver medal in 1805. Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte (29 September 1758 – 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. Eleanor Coade (3 June 1733 – 18 November 1821) was a British businesswoman known for manufacturing Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical statues, architectural decorations and garden ornaments made of ''Lithodipyra'' or Coade stone for over 50 years from 1769 until her death. She should not be confused or conflated with her mother, also named Eleanor.Since the mid-20th century, there has been some confusion between Eleanor and her mother (Eleanor, Elinore), as to which one ran the factory. Commercial Rooms, Bristol
The Commercial Rooms () are in Corn Street, Bristol, England. Built in 1810 by Charles Busby, the building has sculpture by J. G. Bubb. Originally it housed a club for mercantile interests and during the mid-19th century it was a haunt of local prostitutes. The retained wind vane above the bar would let merchants know whether it was safe for their ships to negotiate the treacherous Avon Gorge, and the wall boards still contain the names of all the club's presidents, treasurers and secretaries. Bas-relief
Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone. John Bacon (1777–1859)
John Bacon (1777–1859), also known as John Bacon the Younger, or Junior, to distinguish him from his equally famous John Bacon (sculptor, born 1740), father, was an English sculptor. Biography Bacon was the second son of the sculptor John Bacon (sculptor, born 1740), John Bacon and his wife Elizabeth Wade. He was born at his parents' home in Newman Street in the City of Westminster on 13 March 1777. He entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of twelve, one of the youngest pupils ever admitted. At fifteen, Bacon exhibited his first work; at sixteen, he was awarded the silver medal of the Royal Academy; and in 1797 he won the gold medal for his statue of Cassandra. Peter Turnerelli (c.1772–1839) was an Irish-born sculptor of Italian descent working in Britain in the early 19th century. Life and career He was born in Belfast, the son of Iacomo (James) Turnerelli, a sculptor, whose own father had left Italy as a refugee, despite being landed gentry in the Lake Como region. His grandfather's surname had been Tognarelli, but this was quickly adapted to the Irish vernacular. The family moved to Dublin in 1787, often thereafter identifying him as "from Dublin". Francis Leggatt Chantrey
Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey (7 April 1781 – 25 November 1841) was an English sculptor. He became the leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time. Chantrey's most notable works include the statues of King George IV (Trafalgar Square); King George III (Guildhall), and George Washington (Massachusetts State House). William Theed (1764–1817), called William Theed the elder, was an English sculptor and painter, the father of William Theed the younger, who was also a sculptor.
