J. E. Lummus
James Edward 'J.E.' Lummus (1867-1955) was a banker, businessman and 2nd Mayor of the City of Miami. Early life J.E. Lummus and his brother J.N. Lummus were the sons of a Confederate Civil War veteran who moved the family to Levy County Florida after the war. Lummus attended Eastman's Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York, from which he graduated in 1888. Returning to Bronson, Levy County, he managed a mercantile store of his own. He also formed a partnership with his uncle in a second general merchandise business. Miami Pioneers The Lummus brothers moved to the Miami area with the development of the railroad, around 1896. J.E. owned a general store in Miami until about 1908 when he sold the business and began investing in real estate and banking. Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Park North Cemetery And Mausoleum
Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Park North Cemetery and Mausoleum is one of the oldest cemeteries in Miami, Florida. Woodlawn Park Cemetery–North was established in 1913 by three pioneers in Miami's early history – Thomas O. Wilson, William N. Urmey and Clifton D. Benson. The Woodlawn group of cemeteries grew throughout the years, and funeral homes were added as well. The founders imported rare tropical trees and shrubs to adorn the cemetery, including the first schefflera (umbrella trees) and mahogany trees brought to the United States. History Woodlawn Park in 1926 commissioned a noted mausoleum architect, McDonald Lovell, to design a mausoleum for the park. The present building covers more than a city block, accented with marble, stained glass, and hand-wrought bronze gates. The cemetery contains 13 British Commonwealth war graves of World War II, comprising one British and two New Zealand airmen, and ten Royal Navy personnel. The government of the city of Miami, Florida is organized under the City Charter, which provides for a mayor-commissioner form of city government. History Of Miami
Thousands of years before Europeans arrived, a large portion of south east Florida, including the area where Miami, Florida exists today, was inhabited by Tequestas. The Tequesta (also Tekesta, Tegesta, Chequesta, Vizcaynos) Native American tribe, at the time of first European contact, occupied an area along the southeastern Atlantic coast of Florida. They had infrequent contact with Europeans and had largely migrated by the middle of the 18th century. Miami is named after the Mayaimi, a Native American tribe that lived around Lake Okeechobee until the 17th or 18th century. The Spanish established a mission and small garrison among the Tequesta on Biscayne Bay in 1567. The mission and garrison were withdrawn a couple of years later. In 1743 the governor of Cuba established another mission and garrison on Biscayne Bay. John Bryn Williams (born 1977), known as John B, is an English disc jockey and electronic music producer. He is widely recognised for his eccentric clothing and wild hair and his production of several cutting edge drum and bass tracks. Dodge Island
Dodge Island is an artificial island near downtown Miami, Florida, United States. The Port of Miami is located on Dodge Island and has berths for both cruise and cargo ships. The original and much smaller Dodge Island was created during the dredging of Government Cut in the early 1900s. According to '' The Miami News'', the island went unnamed until 1950 when Mr and Mrs Ray Dodge of Wisconsin, friends of Frank Stearns, director of the City of Miami Planning Board, were visiting and asked what the island was called and, "unable to come up with a name of the island ... Lummus Park Historic District
The Lummus Park Historic District or simply Lummus Park, is on the National Register of Historic Places and a locally historic designated district in Miami, Florida. It is roughly bound by Northwest Fifth Street to the north, Flagler Street to the south, Northwest Third Avenue to the east, and the Miami River to the west. On October 25, 2006, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Lummus Park has some of the oldest structures in Miami, and over the decades, has been able to retain a large part of its early pioneer character. History Lummus Park, was created in 1909, as one of Miami's first open, green spaces. The opening of the park in 1909, spurred development in the area, and today, most of the building around the park were built before 1926.
