J.P. Koch Fjord
J.P. Koch Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, northern Greenland. To the west, the fjord opens into the Lincoln Sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is named after Danish captain and explorer of the Arctic Johan Peter Koch (1870 – 1928), Geography The fjord opens to the northwest to the east of Freuchen Land and to the south and west of Nansen Land. The Hans Tausen Ice Cap lies to the east of the inner fjord. The Navarana Fjord branches south in the middle fjord zone. The Henson Glacier (Greenland), Henson Glacier discharges from the south at its head and the Expedition Glacier from the east further north from the terminus of the Henson Glacier. Henson Glacier (Greenland)
Henson Glacier ( da, Henson Gletscher), is one of the major glaciers in northern Greenland. It was named in 1917 for African-American Arctic explorer Matthew Henson by Knud Rasmussen during the Second Thule Expedition to north Greenland. The Henson Gletscher Formation, which preserves trilobites and echinoderm fossils, among others, is named after this glacier. Geography The Henson Glacier originates in the Greenland Ice Cap. It is roughly north–south oriented and has its terminus at the head of the J.P. Koch Fjord. The Expedition Glacier discharges from the west north of the terminus of the Henson Glacier, between the head of the fjord and Navarana Fjord on the Freuchen Land side. Sirius Passet
Sirius Passet is a Cambrian Lagerstätte in Peary Land, Greenland. The Sirius Passet Lagerstätte was named after the Sirius sledge patrol that operates in North Greenland. It comprises six places in Nansen Land, on the east shore of J.P. Koch Fjord in the far north of Greenland. It was discovered in 1984 by A. Higgins of the Geological Survey of Greenland. A preliminary account was published by Simon Conway Morris and others in 1987 and expeditions led by J. S. Peel and Conway Morris have returned to the site several times between 1989 and the present. A field collection of perhaps 10,000 fossil specimens has been amassed. It is a part of the Buen Formation. Sverdrup Island ( da, Sverdrup Ø) is an uninhabited island in the far north of Greenland, in the Northeast Greenland National Park area. It is named after Otto Sverdrup. Geography Sverdrup Island is located west of Nansen Land, to the north of Freuchen Land off the mouth of J.P. Koch Fjord in the Lincoln Sea, and to the east of Elison Island and John Murray Island. The island has an area of 436 km ² and a shoreline of 130 kilometres. Chipp Sound in the west separates Sverdrup Island from smaller Elison Island and Mascart Sound in the east separates it from Nansen Land. Lemming Fjord has its mouth in the NW side of the island and extends deeply southwards, almost cutting Sverdrup Island in two. Navarana Fjord
Navarana Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, far northern Greenland. It is named after an Inuit woman. In 1984 important zinc and barium deposits were discovered in the Navarana Fjord. Australian Ironbark Zinc corporation was granted an exploration licence in 2007. History This fjord was mapped by Danish Arctic explorer Eigil Knuth during the Danish Peary Land Expedition of 1947–1950. It was named after Navarana Mequpaluk (died 1921), the wife of Arctic explorer Peter Freuchen (1886–1957). Navarana had died at Upernavik in 1921 just before joining the Fifth Thule Expedition with her husband.
