Ivan Skobrev
Ivan Aleksandrovich Skobrev (russian: Иван Александрович Скобрев; born 8 February 1983 in Khabarovsk) is a Russian speed skater. Career At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he won the bronze medal in the 5000 meters as well as the silver medal in the 10000 meters. He is the 2011 European and World Allround Champion. At the 2006 European Championships he finished in fifth place. He qualified for four distances for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He finished eleventh in the 5000 meters, sixth in the 1500 and 10000 meters and fifth in the team pursuit. The men's 5000 m speed skating competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, was held on 11 February, the first day of competition at the Olympics. The American Chad Hedrick, a former inline skater, began his quest to emulate Eric Heiden by taking five gold medals by racing a time of 6:14.68, 0.02 second behind the four-year-old Olympic record of Jochem Uytdehaage, which was enough to clinch gold. Dutchman Sven Kramer won the silver medal, 1.72 seconds adrift, while home skater Enrico Fabris claimed Italy's first medal by skating home the bronze in the last pair. The 2006 Winter Olympics, officially the XX Olympic Winter Games ( it, XX Giochi olimpici invernali) and also known as Torino 2006, were a winter multi-sport event held from 10 to 26 February 2006 in Turin, Italy. This marked the second time Italy had hosted the Winter Olympics, the first being in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo; Italy had also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960 in Rome. Turin was selected as the host city for the 2006 Games in June 1999. The official motto of Torino 2006 was "Passion lives here". The Games' logo depicted a stylized profile of the Mole Antonelliana building, drawn in white and blue ice crystals, signifying the snow and the sky. Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors racing, race each other in travelling a certain distance on Ice skate, skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. The 2007 Winter Universiade, the XXIII Winter Universiade, took place in Turin, Italy from January 17 to 27, 2007. Opening ceremony The Opening Ceremony of the XXIII Winter Universiade Torino 2007 was held with a cast of acrobats, circus performers and dancers. The evening began with the "Princess of the Snow", Magda Gomes, who introduced the audience to a journey that joins Turin to the rest of the world through the student spirit of the Universiade. Her message was followed by a parade of the 52 participant nations and a speech by Giovanna Capellano Nebiolo (President of the Organizing Committee) and George Killian (FISU President). The Speed skating events have been contested at the Universiade since 1968. The sport have a special status at the event, because the host cities are not expected to build a speed skating rink specifically for the Universiade.
