Ivan Russell
Ivan Russell (born 13 October 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League (now known as the Australian Football League). Russell, from Beechworth finished third in the 1968 Ovens & King Football League best and fairest award, the Clyde Baker Medal with 16 votes and was runner up in the 1969 Beechworth FC best and fairest. Russell was best on ground in Beechworth’s losing 1969 Ovens & King Football League grand final side before signing with Geelong. Russell later played 87 games with Geelong West Football Club, between 1975 and 1979, including their 1975 VFA Division One premiership. Russell represented the VFA in 1979, in a convincing 156 point win against Queensland at Toorak Park. Beechworth Football Club
Beechworth is a well-preserved historical town located in the north-east of Victoria, Australia, famous for its major growth during the gold rush days of the mid-1850s. At the , Beechworth had a population of 3,859. Beechworth's many historical buildings are well preserved and the town has re-invented itself and evolved into a popular tourist destination and growing wine-producing centre. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Ovens & King Football Netball League is a minor country Australian rules football league based in North-Eastern Victoria in the vicinity of Wangaratta and more recently Benalla. History The ''Ovens & King Football League'' was formed on the 13th of June 1903, after a handful of men met at The Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta to consider forming a football competition. One week later, the first matches of the Ovens & King Football Association were played. The competition changed its name to the Ovens and King Football League after the 1928 season. Geelong West Football Club
The Geelong West St Peters Football Club was an Australian rules football club that last competed in the Geelong Football League (GFL) from 1989 until the end of the 2016 season. Prior to its merger with St Peters Football Club in 1989, the club played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1963 until 1988. Wally Russell (25 March 1923 – 4 March 1981) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond and Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Russell was a member of 1946 Richmond Reserves premiership team. Upon leaving Geelong, Russell was the St. Kilda Reserves Captain-Coach in 1950, playing 18 games, then went to BlackRock as Captain-Coach in 1951–52, then onto Carrum as Captain-Coach from 1953 to 1962, winning a premiership in 1959, winning the club Best & Fairest in 1958 and he also won a league Best & Fairest award too.
