Italians In Paraguay
Italian Paraguayans are one of the most prominent ethnic minorities in Paraguay, consisting mainly of Italian residents who migrated to Paraguay or Paraguayan-born citizens of Italian descent. Italian immigration to Paraguay has been one of the largest migration flows this South American country has received. Italians in Paraguay are the second-largest immigrant group in the country after the Spaniards. Asunción
Asunción (, , , Guarani: Paraguay) is the capital and the largest city of Paraguay. The city stands on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, almost at the confluence of this river with the Pilcomayo River. The Paraguay River and the Bay of Asunción in the northwest separate the city from the Occidental Region of Paraguay and from Argentina in the south part of the city. Gabriel Casaccia
Gabriel Casaccia Bibolini (April 20, 1907 – November 24, 1980) was a Paraguayan novelist. He is considered the father of modern Paraguayan literature. Augusto Roa Bastos, another notable Paraguayan novelist, is quoted as saying “Gabriel Casaccia is the founder of modern Paraguayan narrative, which gives, in good measure, a fundamental character to all of his work and, to its author, the unusual merit of having launched the genre in a country which was fictionally unknown.” Life Casaccia was born in Asunción, Paraguay. People's Revolutionary Army (Argentina)
The People's Revolutionary Army ( es, Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo, abbreviated as ERP) was the military branch of the communist Workers' Revolutionary Party (, PRT) in Argentina. History Origins The ERP was founded as the armed wing of the PRT, a communist party emerging from the Trotskyist tradition, but soon turned to the Maoist theory, especially the Cultural Revolution. Oberdan Sallustro
Oberdan Sallustro (1915 in Asunción, Paraguay – 1972 in Buenos Aires) was an Italian-Paraguayan entrepreneur, Director General of FIAT Concord in Argentina. He was kidnapped and killed in 1972 by the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (ERP) guerrilla group, according to newspaper reports. Biography Oberdan Sallustro had been kidnapped on March 21, 1972, by a six-man, one-woman commando unit of the ERP. The guerrillas shot and killed him on April 10, 1972, after the place where they had hidden him had been discovered. Both the kidnapping and the murder caused an enormous impact in the country itself and internationally. Cirilo Antonio Rivarola
Cirilo Antonio Rivarola Acosta (1836 – 31 December 1878) was the 4th President of Paraguay and served from 1870 to 1871. Biography The Rivarola family was important in Paraguayan politics throughout the 19th century, and often found itself at odds with the Francia and López governments. During most of the War of the Triple Alliance, Rivarola served in the Paraguayan Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant. In 1869, however, amidst a wave of repression led by then president Francisco Solano López, he was arrested due to reasons unknown. He then escaped captivity and in some of the war's remaining months served as a spy for the allies. Afterwards, he went to Asunción, where, thanks in part to his good relations with the Brazilian authorities, he was made one of the triumvirs who headed the provisional government that was created (mostly by Silva Paranhos, the chief Brazilian diplomat in Paraguay then). Luis Ángel González Macchi
Luis Ángel González Macchi (born December 13, 1947, in Asunción) was the President of Paraguay from 1999 until 2003. Career He was the President of the Paraguayan Senate from 1998 to 1999. As the president of the Senate, González Macchi was next in line for the presidency on March 23, 1999 following the assassination of Vice President Luis María Argaña. President Raúl Cubas was suspected of being involved in the assassination. This, combined with other scandals resulted in his impeachment by the Chamber of Deputies on March 24. Realizing that he faced almost certain conviction and removal by the Senate, Cubas resigned on March 29, and González Macchi ascended to the presidency. Juan Carlos Wasmosy Monti
Juan Carlos Wasmosy Monti (born December 15, 1938) was the president of Paraguay from August 15, 1992 until August 15, 1998. He was a member of the Colorado Party, and the country's first freely elected president, as well as the first civilian president in 39 years. José Patricio Guggiari
José Patricio Guggiari Corniglione (17 March 1884, in Asunción – 30 October 1957, in Buenos Aires) was a Paraguayan politician by the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico. He was President of the Republic of Paraguay between 1928 and 1932. In 1931, after a bloody repression against a demonstration calling for a more vigorous action in defense of the Chaco, he left office to be judged by Parliament. Absolved, he regained the presidency.
