The Italian football champions ( it, Campione d'Italia di calcio, plural: ''Campioni'') are the annual winners of Serie A, Italy's premier football league competition. The title has been contested since 1898 in varying forms of competition. Milan are the current champions, while Juventus have won a record 36 titles. The first time the ''Scudetto'' ( it, scudetto, "little shield", plural: ''scudetti'') was used was in 1924 when Genoa won its ninth championship title and decided to add a little shield to their shirt as to reward and celebrate themselves as champions. The finals of the first Italian Football Championship was decided in a single day with four teams competing, three from Turin and one from Genoa. Union of European Football Associations (UEFA ; french: Union des associations européennes de football; german: Union der europäischen Fußballverbände) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. The Independent
''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The newspaper was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to the Russian oligarch and former KGB Officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010. Luigi Allemandi
Luigi Allemandi (; 8 November 1903 – 25 September 1978) was an Italian footballer who played as a defender, usually as a left back. He was a member of the Italy national team which won the 1934 World Cup. Club career Born in San Damiano Macra, province of Cuneo, Allemandi debuted in 1921 with A.C. Legnano. Later, he played with Juventus F.C., F.C. Internazionale Milano, A.S. Roma, S.S.C. Venezia and S.S. Lazio, and also had a successful international career with Italy. However, the part of his career that stands out is the corruption scandal in the Torino–Juventus derby in 1927 that resulted in Torino being stripped of their title. According to the official account, a manager from Torino offered Allemandi 35 000 lira to throw the game, 25 000 immediately and the rest after the match. 1926–27 Divisione Nazionale
The 1926–27 Divisione Nazionale season was won by Torino on the field, however the title was revoked during the following season due to alleged match fixing in a derby match against Juventus. This was the first Italian championship organized on a national basis. The Viareggio Charter In 1926 the ''”Viareggio Charter”'' submitted the Italian football's organization to the fascist regime. The ''Northern League'' was disbanded and it was substituted by the '' Higher Divisions Directory'', an authority appointed by the fascists. Three clubs from Southern Italy were added to the original sixteen-clubs championship to make it a national league. The 20th club had been chosen by a special qualification between the relegated clubs of the Northern League which was won by US Alessandria. Viareggio
Viareggio () is a city and ''comune'' in northern Tuscany, Italy, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 62,000, it is the second largest city within the province of Lucca, after Lucca. It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873), and its papier-mâché floats, which (since 1925), parade along the promenade known as "Passeggiata a mare", in the weeks of Carnival. 1921–22 Prima Categoria (FIGC)
The 1921–22 Prima Categoria season was won by Novese. During the Summer of 1921, a dispute between the ''Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio'' (FIGC) and the strongest teams within the league arose. The teams asked for a reduction of the number of participants in the ''1a Divisione''. Vittorio Pozzo developed a plan to accommodate the teams' requests, however, after a vote the plan was not passed; the smaller clubs feared that they would disappear if such a reduction was introduced. This led to the creation of a new Italian football federation, the CCI (''Confederazione Calcistica Italiana''), that organized a championship concurrent to the FIGC championship. The 1921–22 Prima Divisione season was won by Pro Vercelli. The CCI Italian Football Championship was formed during the summer of 1921, as a result of a dispute between the ''Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio'' and the main teams. The teams asked for a reduction of the number of participants in the ''First Category''.
