''Island Etude'' () is a 2006 Cinema of Taiwan, Taiwanese film Film director, directed by Chen Hwai-en. It was Taiwan's submission to the 80th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee. Plot A film about a hearing impaired college student who grabs his bike, backpack, and guitar and goes on a 7-day, 6-night Taiwan Cycling Route No.1#Bicycle culture in Taiwan, round-the-island tour. On the way he discovers the natural and cultural beauty of Taiwan and during his encounters with different people he is exposed to local arts, folk customs, approaches to environmental protection, traditional family values, and a host of other cultural enlightenments. Chen Hwai-en
Chen Hwai-en (; born 1959) is a Taiwanese film director and cinematographer. He began working with Hou Hsiao-hsien in 1983, as a script supervisor. Chen's debut feature film ''Island Etude'' (2006) was shown at the Taipei Film Festival, and served as Taiwan's submission to the 80th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film after ''Lust, Caution'' was rejected. A few of Chen's documentaries have been funded by entrepreneur Tung Tsu-hsien, namely ''The Untrammeled Traveler'' (2011) about writer Yu Kuang-chung, and ''Man-fei'' (2017), titled for its subject, choreographer Lo Man-fei. This is a list of submissions to the 80th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is handed out annually by the Academy to a feature length, feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Wu Nien-jen (; born ; 5 August 1952) is a Taiwanese screenwriter, Film director, director, and writer. He is one of the most prolific and highly regarded scriptwriters in Taiwan and a leading member of the New Taiwanese Cinema, although he has also acted in a number of films. He starred in Edward Yang's 2000 film ''Yi Yi''. Wu is a well-known supporter of the Democratic Progressive Party and has filmed commercials for the party. Early and personal life Wu was born into a coal miner's family in 1952 and raised in the mining town of Jiufen. ''Ruta'' (commonly known as rue) is a genus of strongly scented evergreen subshrubs, 20–60 cm tall, in the family Rutaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, Macaronesia and southwest Asia. About ten species are accepted in the genus. The most well-known species is ''Ruta graveolens'' (rue or common rue). The leaves are bipinnate or tripinnate, with a feathery appearance, and green to strongly glaucous blue-green in colour.
