Isaac N. Coggs
Isaac Newton Coggs (June 5, 1920 – April 8, 1973) was an American Democratic politician and civil rights leader from Wisconsin. Coggs was the second African American State Representative to Chair a Wisconsin Legislative committee (the first being LeRoy J. Simmons, 1945-1952). He was the first African American member of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. Early life and career Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Coggs graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and served in the United States Army during World War II. Coggs was an accountant by trade, and served as President of the Northside Milwaukee Businessmen's Association, member of the YMCA Board, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1953 to 1964, and then the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors from 1964 until 1968. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells. Leaders of the organization included Thurgood Marshall and Roy Wilkins. Its mission in the 21st century is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination".
