IsaPlanner
IsaPlanner is a proof planner for the interactive proof assistant, Isabelle. Originally developed by Lucas DixonA Proof Planning Framework for Isabelle. Lucas Dixon. PhD Thesis, University of Edinburgh. 2005. as part of his PhD thesis at the University of Edinburgh, it is now maintained by members of the Mathematical Reasoning Group, in the School of Informatics at Edinburgh. IsaPlanner is the latest of a series of proof planners written at Edinburgh. Earlier planners include Clam and LambdaClam. Features IsaPlanner allows the user to encode reasoning techniques, using a combinator language, for conjecturing and proving theorems. IsaPlanner works by manipulating reasoning states, records of open goals, the current proof plan and other important information, and combinators are functions mapping reasoning states to lazy lists of successor reasoning states. Automated theorem proving (also known as ATP or automated deduction) is a subfield of automated reasoning and mathematical logic dealing with proving mathematical theorems by computer programs. Automated reasoning over mathematical proof was a major impetus for the development of computer science. Higher-order Logic
mathematics and logic, a higher-order logic is a form of predicate logic that is distinguished from first-order logic by additional quantifiers and, sometimes, stronger semantics. Mathematical Induction
Mathematical induction is a method for proving that a statement ''P''(''n'') is true for every natural number ''n'', that is, that the infinitely many cases ''P''(0), ''P''(1), ''P''(2), ''P''(3), ...  all hold. Best First Search
Best-first search is a class of search algorithms, which explore a graph by expanding the most promising node chosen according to a specified rule. Judea Pearl described the best-first search as estimating the promise of node ''n'' by a "heuristic evaluation function f(n) which, in general, may depend on the description of ''n'', the description of the goal, the information gathered by the search up to that point, and most importantly, on any extra knowledge about the problem domain.". pp. 94 and 95 (note 3). Rippling
In computer science, more particularly in automated theorem proving, rippling refers to a group of meta-level heuristics, developed primarily in the Mathematical Reasoning Group in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, and most commonly used to guide inductive proofs in automated theorem proving systems. Rippling may be viewed as a restricted form of rewrite system, where special object level annotations are used to ensure fertilization upon the completion of rewriting, with a measure decreasing requirement ensuring termination for any set of rewrite rules and expression. Heuristic
A heuristic (; ), or heuristic technique, is any approach to problem solving or self-discovery that employs a practical method that is not guaranteed to be optimal, perfect, or rational, but is nevertheless sufficient for reaching an immediate, short-term goal or approximation. Where finding an optimal solution is impossible or impractical, heuristic methods can be used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution.
