Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District is a public school district based in Iraan, Texas, United States. In addition to Iraan, the district serves the communities of Sheffield and Bakersfield. Iraan-Sheffield ISD has three campuses: * Iraan High School (grades 9-12) * Iraan Junior High School (grades 6-8) * Iraan Elementary School (prekindergarten-grade 5) In 2009, the school district was rated " recognized" by the Texas Education Agency. Iraan, Texas
Iraan ( ) is a city in Pecos County, Texas, United States. Its population was 1,229 at the 2010 census. The city's name is an amalgamation of the first names of Ira and Ann Yates, owners of the ranch land upon which the town was built. History Iraan was an oil boom town, and it developed quickly after the discovery of the gigantic Yates Oil Field, which is adjacent to the town on the southwest. The oil field was discovered in 1926, and the first buildings in town were basic housing and infrastructure for workers on the field, all built by the Big Lake Oil Company, which became Plymouth Oil Company, which was purchased by the Ohio Oil Company, then purchased by Marathon Oil Company, and owned today by Kinder Morgan. Sheffield, Texas
Sheffield is an unincorporated community in Pecos County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 600 in 2000. Geography Sheffield is located at the intersection of State Highway 290, State Highway 349, and FM 1217 on the eastern edge of Pecos County, about 16 miles southeast of Iraan and 60 miles east of Fort Stockton in eastern Pecos County. History The first documented Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorer Gaspar Castaño de Sosa and his men, who traveled up the Pecos River in 1590. Although several Spanish-led expeditions followed, no permanent settlements were established in the area. In 1849, the Army surveyed the San Antonio-El Paso Road from San Antonio to El Paso, and the route included what is now Sheffield because of the Pecos Spring and the Pecos Crossing or Lancaster Crossing, named for the nearby Fort Lancaster. Iraan High School is a public high school located in Iraan, Texas, United States, and classified as a 1A school by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). It is part of the Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District located in extreme east central Pecos County. In 2015, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.
