Nada Surf is a New York City-based American alternative rock band formed in the 1990s, consisting of Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals), Ira Elliot (drums), Doug Gillard (guitar, backing vocals), and Daniel Lorca (bass, backing vocals). History 1990s Nada Surf was formed in 1992 by Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca. They originally went by the name Helicopter but later changed it to Nada Surf, which Caws said is "actually referring to something much more existential, it's just surfing on nothing. Fuzztones
The Fuzztones are an American garage rock revival band formed in 1982. History Founded by singer-guitarist Rudi Protrudi in New York City, the band has gone through several member changes but is currently active in Europe. Dismissed by some critics and listeners as a "bar band" or unoriginal, they maintained a strong fan base in New York, in Europe (with their music being played on Hungarian State Radio), and in Los Angeles. Vitreous Humor (band)
Vitreous Humor was an American alternative rock band formed in Topeka, Kansas, in the late 1980s by Danny Pound, Brad Allen, and Dan Benson. Described by AllMusic as "not easily categorized", the band was often referred to as "emo". History Originally a quartet, the band had a revolving door of bassists until in 1993, Allen opted to play the bass. The group stayed as a trio for a year until the band took in Brooks Rice as their bassist, allowing Allen to return to his role of guitarist. Their sound was an angular, noisy take on indie rock, often juxtaposing clean, jangly chords and minimal guitar lines with dissonant, distorted power chords, much in the vein of Sonic Youth. The dB's are an American alternative rock and power pop group, who formed in New York City in 1978 and first came to prominence in the early 1980s. Their debut album, '' Stands for Decibels'', is often acclaimed as one of the greatest "lost" power pop albums of the 1980s. The band members are Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Will Rigby, and Gene Holder. Although the members are all from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the group was formed in New York City in 1978. Frederick J. Maher is an American drummer, music programmer and record producer. He was a member of the bands Massacre (1980–81), the Dance, Material, Scritti Politti, and has recorded and toured with Lou Reed. In 1984 he released ''Basic'', an instrumental collaboration album with ex- Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine. Maher's credits as a producer include Lou Reed's ''New York'' (1989), Trip Shakespeare's ''Across the Universe'' (1990), Matthew Sweet's ''Girlfriend'' (1991), Information Society's self-titled album (1988, which achieved platinum sales status), their 1990 album ''Hack'', and a track on 1997's '' Don't Be Afraid''. ''The Proximity Effect'' is the second album by the alternative rock band Nada Surf. It was released by Elektra Records in Europe in 1998, and by MarDev in North America in August 2000. Recording Finding no radio-friendly single on the album, Elektra asked the band to write a hit, had them record covers of other artists, and tried to push ''Why Are You So Mean To Me?'' as the first single. The band refused and, after its release in Europe in September 1998, the band did a 30-show tour in France in early 1999. Elektra dropped the band, initially setting a high purchase price for the rights to the album. The band eventually released the album in the United States via their own label, MarDev, in 2000. "Popular" is a song by American alternative rock band Nada Surf, released as the first single from their debut album, '' High/Low'' (1996), in May 1996. Each verse in "Popular" presents, in spoken-word format, sarcastic advice to teenagers taken from the book ''Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity'' by American actress Gloria Winters. The song reached number 11 on the US '' Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart and propelled the album to number 63 on the ''Billboard'' 200. "Popular" was also a big hit in Iceland, topping the country's chart for two weeks, and in France, where it reached number 10 and received a Gold certification for sales of over 250,000. Superdrag is an American alternative rock band from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. They are best known for their 1996 single, " Sucked Out", off their album ''Regretfully Yours'', for which a video was played on MTV. Terry Tolkin
Terry Tolkin (September 10, 1959 – January 21, 2022) was an American music executive and music journalist. In the 1980s, Tolkin worked for several record labels, including Touch & Go Records, Rough Trade Records, and his own No.6 Records. From 1992 to 1996, he was an A&R representative for Elektra Records, where he signed alternative groups such as Stereolab and Afghan Whigs. Early career Tolkin originated from Kansas, moving to New York City in his youth. Tolkin has been credited for coining the term " alternative music" in 1979 while writing for the trade publication ''Rockpool''. Tolkin never disputed that claim, but it is undetermined whether he was the first to use the term. Josh Deutsch is an American musician and composer. Primarily known as a trumpet player, he is a founding member of the Queens Jazz Overground, leads the band Pannonia and the Josh Deutsch Quintet, and performs regularly in a duo with guitarist Nico Soffiato. Deutsch is also an educator, who has taught privately and at various institutions including the Queens College CPSM and the University of Oregon, as well as mentoring at the Young Composers and Improvisors Workshop. Richard Theodore Otcasek (March 23, 1944 – September 15, 2019), known as Ric Ocasek, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. He was the primary co-lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, songwriter, and frontman for the rock band the Cars. Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992.
