National Liberal Party (Romania)
The National Liberal Party ( ro, Partidul Național Liberal, PNL) is a liberal-conservative political party in Romania (and the second largest overall political party in the country as of 2022). Re-founded in mid January 1990, shortly after the Revolution of 1989 which culminated in the fall of communism in Romania, it claims the legacy of the major political party of the same name, active between 1875 and 1947 in the Kingdom of Romania. Based on this legacy, it often presents itself as the first formally constituted political party in the country and the oldest party from the family of European liberal parties. Until 2014, the PNL was a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). The party statutes adopted in June 2014 dropped any reference to international affiliation, consequently most of its MEPs joined the European People's Party Group (EPP) in the European Parliament. Radu Câmpeanu
Radu-Anton Câmpeanu (; 28 February 1922 - 19 October 2016) was a Romanian politician who was also jurist and economist by profession, after graduating from the University of Bucharest in November 1945. During the interwar period and up until 1945, he was the leader of the National Liberal students' association at nationwide level (the equivalent of today's National Liberal Youth Wing). While in exile in France, at some point in time due to the exile of Paul Goma and his arrival in France, Câmpeanu was suspected to have become an informer for the Securitate (the dreadful Romanian Communist secret police), but no conclusive evidence has been produced to support this allegation. Sorin Bottez
Sorin Bottez (born Sorin-Mircea Bottez; 2 June 1930 – 31 July 2009) was a Romanian politician who stemmed from the National Liberal Party (PNL). During the post-war period, he was vice-president of the National Liberal Youth ( ro, Tineretul Național Liberal). Biography Incarceration during Communism Bottez was born in Timișoara, Kingdom of Romania. He was arrested by the Romanian Communist authorities on 8 February 1949 (then only aged 18 and a half) on the grounds that he was part of the anti-Communist movement "Avram Iancu". At the time, Bottez was a student in the final year at Mihai Viteazul High School in Bucharest. At a trial held on 12 April 1949, he was sentenced to forced labour for 20 years. Bottez was incarcerated at prisons in Aiud, Galați, Gherla, Jilava, Lugoj, Oradea, Pitești, and Târgșor. Nicolae Enescu (26 November 1911 – 1993) was a Romanian politician who stemmed from the National Liberal Party (PNL) and was one of its re-founding members in early 1990, in the wake of the 1989 Romanian Revolution.
