Per Law No.40/98/AN in 1998, Burkina Faso adhered to decentralization to provide administrative and financial autonomy to local communities. Sud-Ouest is one of Burkina Faso's 13 administrative Regions of Burkina Faso, regions. It was created on July 2, 2001 and had a population of 874,030 in 2019. It covers an area of 16,153 km2.
