Interstate 587 (I-587) is a auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US state of North Carolina. The western terminus of the highway is at Interstate 95 in North Carolina, I-95, Interstate 795 (North Carolina), I-795, and U.S. Route 264, US Highway 264 (US 264) near Wilson, North Carolina, Wilson. The highway Concurrency (road), runs concurrently with I-795 and US 264 around the southern side of Wilson. I-795 diverges toward Goldsboro, North Carolina, Goldsboro east of I-95. The eastern end of the US 264 overlap is located northwest of Saratoga, North Carolina, Saratoga. I-587 continues travelling east, bypassing Saratoga and Farmville, North Carolina, Farmville to the north. The eastern terminus of I-587 is located at US 264 and North Carolina Highway 11 Bypass (NC 11 Byp) in western Greenville, North Carolina, Greenville. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that specializes in highway transportation. The agency's major activities are grouped into two programs, the Federal-aid Highway Program and the Federal Lands Highway Program. History Background The organization has several predecessor organizations and complicated history. The Office of Road Inquiry (ORI) was founded in 1893. In 1905, that organization's name was changed to the Office of Public Roads (OPR) which became a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. The name was changed again to the Bureau of Public Roads in 1915 and to the Public Roads Administration (PRA) in 1939. It was then shifted to the Federal Works Agency which was abolished in 1949 when its name reverted to Bureau of Public Roads under the Department of Commerce ...
