The International Women's Strike, also known as Paro Internacional de Mujeres, was a global movement coordinated across over 50 countries and coinciding with International Women's Day, on 8 March 2017 and 2018. The United Nations announced the theme of "Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030", calling for gender equality around the globe. Laura Lee (sex Worker)
Laura Lee (25 April 1973 – 7 February 2018) was an Irish sex worker and civil rights activist, who became a campaigner for the rights of people in the sex industry. Biography Lee was born in Dublin, but moved to Scotland in 2003 where she lived in Kilmarnock, near Glasgow. She had previously begun her career in sex work at the age of 19 in a massage parlour. After moving to Scotland, she became an independent escort and frequently visited Dublin and Belfast for work and to campaign. She graduated in law from Portobello College in Dublin, and at the time of her death was in her third year of studying towards a degree in psychology. She had a daughter, who was aware of her work. When Lee moved to Scotland, she settled in Oban and worked in a well-paid position in a bank while simultaneously working in the sex industry. United Voices Of The World
United Voices of the World (UVW) is an independent grassroots trade union, established in London in 2014. Following a vote held at its 2021 AGM, the post of General Secretary was re-established after three years of non-hierarchical leadership, and voting seats on the Executive Committee were assigned to elected representatives of key sectors of the membership. Uncontested elections for General Secretary in August 2021 resulted in Petros Elia winning by default. Its members are mainly migrant cleaners and workers in other service or low-wage/ outsourced industries. UVW has a strong association with the Latin American community, having been formed amid a protracted effort to secure the London Living Wage for migrant cleaners at the Barbican Centre.
