The International Federation of Variety Artists (IFVA) was a global union federation bringing together trade unions representing entertainers other than musicians and actors. History The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) organised a World Congress of Intellectual Workers in Brussels in 1951, and the idea for an international organisation of trade unions of variety artists arose. This led to a conference in Hamburg in 1952, at which the secretariat was established. The International Federation of Actors (french: Federation Internationale des Acteurs, FIA) is a global union federation bringing together trade unions representing actors. History The federation was established in 1952, on the initiative of British Actors' Equity Association, and the Syndicat Français des Artistes-Inteprètes. The organisation's logo was designed by Jean Cocteau. In 1970, the International Federation of Variety Artists joined the organisation. For many years, the secretariat was independent of both the main international federations of trade unions, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the World Federation of Trade Unions, and as such, by the 1980s, it represented both unions in capitalist countries, and in communist countries. A global union federation (GUF) is an international federation of national trade unions organizing in specific industry sectors or occupational groups. Historically, such federations in the social democratic tradition described as international trade secretariats (ITS),. while those in the Christian democratic tradition described themselves as international trade federations. Equivalent sectoral bodies linked to the World Federation of Trade Unions described themselves as Trade Union Internationals. Many unions are members of one or more global union federations, relevant to the sectors where they have their members. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) was an international trade union. It came into being on 7 December 1949 following a split within the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), and was dissolved on 31 October 2006 when it merged with the World Confederation of Labour (WCL) to form the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). Prior to being dissolved, the ICFTU had a membership of 157 million members in 225 affiliated organisations in 148 countries and territories. Danish Artist Union
The Danish Artist Union ( da, Dansk Artist Forbund, DAF) is a trade union representing variety performers and musicians in Denmark. The International Artist Lodge was established in 1901, but ceased to function during World War I. In 1918, 25 artists met at the Café National in Copenhagen, and founded the Danish Artist Union, initially led by Willy Torp, a contortionist and comic juggler. The union affiliated to the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) in 1953, but remained very small. It had only 200 members in 1954, at which time it was led by Willy Manley. In 1958, the union established an unemployment fund, and this encouraged many actors to join the union. However, in 1974, the Danish Actors' Association set up its own unemployment fund, and since then, few actors have joined DAF. The Variety Artistes' Federation (VAF) was a trade union representing variety performers in the United Kingdom. History The union was founded on 18 February 1906, after discussions between the show business social club and charity the Grand Order of Water Rats (GOWR); the Music Hall Artists Railway Association, which negotiated concessions on rail fares for travelling performers; and the Terriers, another club for variety performers.
