International Confederation Of Midwives
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) supports, represents and works to strengthen professional associations of midwives on a global basis. At present, ICM has over 100 members, representing midwifery associations in around 100 countries. The ICM works with midwives and midwifery associations globally to secure women’s rights and access to midwifery care before, during and after childbirth. The ICM has worked alongside UN agencies and other partners for decades in global initiatives to help reduce the numbers of mothers and babies who die in and around childbirth, and evidence is growing that shows expanding midwifery care is one of the best ways to combat maternal mortality. Midwives
A midwife is a health professional who cares for mothers and newborns around childbirth, a specialization known as midwifery. The education and training for a midwife concentrates extensively on the care of women throughout their lifespan; concentrating on being experts in what is normal and identifying conditions that need further evaluation. In most countries, midwives are recognized as skilled healthcare providers. Midwives are trained to recognize variations from the normal progress of labor and understand how to deal with deviations from normal. Healthcare Information For All By 2015
Healthcare Information For All (HIFA) is a global campaign and community of practice of health professionals, publishers, librarians, technologists, researchers, policymakers, and patient representatives, working to improve the availability and use of reliable healthcare information worldwide. The rationale for HIFA is described in a Lancet paper, commissioned by the World Health Organization. The paper notes that the lack of availability and use of reliable healthcare information in low- and middle-income countries is a major contributor to avoidable death and suffering, and recommends multistakeholder action to accelerate progress. HIFA was launched in October 2006 at the 10th Congress of the Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa in Mombasa, Kenya (it was initially called HIFA 2015). Association Of Radical Midwives
The Association of Radical Midwives (ARM) is a UK organisation for midwives, doulas, mothers, and anyone concerned with the health of maternity services. The ARM was created in 1976, and is a registered charity. Its founding members were concerned at the increasing medical intervention of childbirth, and used the initials of Artificial 'Artificial Rupture of Membranes', a procedure which was becoming more common. ARM produces the quarterly journal ''Midwifery Matters'. The word 'radical' in the organisation's name means radical as in 'grassroots', or 'fundamental'. Retainment of midwifery skills such as supporting twin vaginal birth, breech vaginal birth, and home birth are a focus of the group, as is the sharing of information, and assisting women with choice and continuity of care. Midwifery Organizations
Midwifery is the health science and health profession that deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period (including care of the newborn), in addition to the sexual and reproductive health of women throughout their lives.
