''Intergalactic Sonic 7″s'' is a singles collection, released by punk-influenced band Ash on 9 September 2002. It is available in two formats, with and without the bonus disc, ''Cosmic Debris''. These are both available on CD and vinyl. It was released to celebrate Ash's tenth anniversary and collected the band's eighteen singles along with "Envy" a new song recorded specifically for the compilation. The American mixes of " Burn Baby Burn" " Jesus Says" and " Wildsurf" are included instead of their original mixes and a shorter edit of " Shining Light is included in place of the version featured on ''Free All Angels'' It peaked at number three in the UK album charts. Ash (band)
Ash are a Northern Irish rock band formed in Downpatrick in 1992 by vocalist and guitarist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurray. As a three-piece, they released mini-album '' Trailer'' in 1994 and full-length album '' 1977'' in 1996. This 1996 release was named by ''NME'' as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. After the success of their full debut the band recruited Charlotte Hatherley as a guitarist and vocalist, releasing their second record ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' in 1998. After narrowly avoiding bankruptcy, the band released ''Free All Angels'' in 2001 and a string of successful singles. The band became a three-piece again in 2006 when Hatherley left, and after five conventional albums the band released 26 singles in the ''A-Z Series'' in 2009, one every two weeks. Wildsurf
"Wildsurf" is a song by Ash, released as the second single from the album ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' on November 23rd, 1998. It reached 31st position in the UK Singles Chart, while doing less prominently in BBC Radio 1, where it was placed in the "C" list. The single was released in CD, 7" vinyl, and cassette. "Wildsurf" has been described by many of having a "summery" feel to it. Tim once said of it: "I was reading Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road' while we were on the road and it really inspired this song." It's about living life, burning like roman candles across the night." The song was written drawing inspiration from the styles of Nirvana and The Beach Boys. An extended version of the song was featured in the CD2 release. This one contains an additional guitar solo by Hatherley. Trailer (album)
''Trailer'' is a mini album by the band Ash featuring their first three singles. An expanded edition also includes four B-sides. The album was released in October 1994 through Infectious Records. The band considered it a " trailer" for their future debut album proper, and named it accordingly. "Uncle Pat" was featured in a Heineken advert, which helped to raise the profile of the band, both in Ireland and Britain. The name refers to movie trailers, so as a visual pun, the cover of the album shows a toppled truck trailer. The 'noise' at the end of the track "Get Out", when reversed, slowed down and the pitch altered, is a low quality demo version of the song "Intense Thing". This track wasn't discovered until June 2006 by 2 fans experimenting around with running different effects through Ash songs. Jack Names The Planets (1994 Single)
"Jack Names the Planets" is the debut single by Ash, released in February 1994. The single was originally released on vinyl only and is entirely different from the album version that appears on their EP, '' Trailer''. The single was re-released on 2 December 2002 in CD format as a limited edition with the Raptor 12" version of "Season" as an extra B-side, as part of the promotion for the ''Intergalactic Sonic 7″s'' greatest hits collection. The song first appeared on the ''Shed'' demo tape, recorded in 1992 and again on the ''Garage Girl'' and '' Pipe Smokin' Brick'' demo-tapes. Ash were first signed when a copy of ''Garage Girl'' was given to Stephen 'Tav' Tavner, who signed them on the basis of "Jack Names the Planets". Only 2,000 copies of the single were released, and the single was recorded on a £300 budget. ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' is the second studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 5 October 1998, through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Following the release of the band's debut studio album, ''1977'' (1996), guitarist Charlotte Hatherley became a member. They wrote new material at a farmhouse, before going to Wales to record their next album at Rockfield Studios. With additional sessions held at the Astoria in London, Ash produced the proceedings alongside Chris Kimsey and Owen Morris. A garage rock record, the New York Dolls, the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground inspired the album. Preceded by ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' lead single " Jesus Says" in September 1998, the band toured the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe until the end of the year. "Goldfinger" is a song by Northern Irish band Ash, released from their debut studio album, ''1977'' (1996), on 15 April 1996. The song was written by Tim Wheeler and produced by Owen Morris. It was released as a single CD, a 7-inch vinyl (the limited-edition 7-inch comes with a golden glitter clear vinyl and an accompanying picture sleeve), and as a cassette. B-sides "Goldfinger" was released with three B-sides. The first B-side, "I Need Somebody", has a big band feel, and was written by Mark Hamilton while he was in hospital. "A Life Less Ordinary" was a non-album single released by the band Ash on 13 October 1997. It was the title track of the film of the same name, '' A Life Less Ordinary'', starring Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor, and also appeared on the film's soundtrack. The single was released in three formats: CD, 7-inch vinyl, and cassette. The limited-edition 7-inch was printed on blue vinyl. The song peaked at number ten on the UK Singles Chart. The band was personally requested for by the director of the film, Danny Boyle. This was also the first song to feature their new guitarist Charlotte Hatherley. ''1977'' is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 6 May 1996 by Home Grown and Infectious Records, with whom the band had signed following the release of several demo tapes. Ash released the mini-album '' Trailer'' in 1994, and followed it with three singles "Kung Fu", " Girl from Mars", and "Angel Interceptor", all of which would reappear on ''1977''. Ash recorded their debut album with producer Owen Morris at Rockfield Studios in Wales in early 1996. Described as a Britpop, power pop and garage rock album, ''1977'' drew comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth. Timothy James Arthur Wheeler (born 4 January 1977) is a Northern Irish singer, songwriter, and musician for the alternative rock band Ash. He has written nearly all of Ash's notable works, such as " Oh Yeah", " Shining Light", " Girl from Mars", "Kung Fu", and " Goldfinger". In November 2014, he released his debut solo album '' Lost Domain''. Early life Timothy James Arthur Wheeler was born in Downpatrick on 4 January 1977, the son of Rosalind E. M. (née Dickson), the daughter of a Northern Bank manager, and George Bomfforde Wheeler (1932–2011), a solicitor and later judge. He is a great-great-grandson of Rev. George Bomfforde Wheeler, who was editor of ''The Irish Times'' from 1859 to 1877. He attended Down High School with his fellow band members Mark Hamilton and Rick McMurray.
