The Institute of Medicine, Suranaree University of Technology () is a medical school in Northeastern Thailand, located in Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. History Following a cabinet meeting on 12 September 1992, it was resolved that due to a lack of medical personnel in Thailand, the medical school universities should increase intake of 340 more medical students for the 1993 academic year. In addition, medical schools should also be set up in regional parts of Thailand and this included an Institute of Medicine at Suranaree University of Technology, approved on 15 December 1993. In January 1995, the university set up a Health Science systems project, consisting of the institutes of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and a Medical Center. However, due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the project was temporarily halted. The first cohort of medical students were accepted in 2006. Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima District
Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima ( th, เมืองนครราชสีมา, ) is one of 32 districts of Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeastern Thailand. Overview Nakhon Ratchasima was built in the reign of King Narai the Great of Ayutthaya kingdom. The king merged two cities, ''Mueang'' Sema and ''Mueang'' Khorakha Pura (Khorat), and moved to the present area. He named the new city "Nakhon Ratchasima". The Suranaree University of Technology ( th, มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีสุรนารี, (SUT) is in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. The university was established on 27 July 1990, becoming fully operational in 1993. It is named after Thao Suranari, the local heroine of Nakhon Ratchasima. It is one of nine National Research Universities of Thailand. Suranaree University of Technology has employed the trimester credit system since 1993 for more efficient use of time, and to avoid the semester systemus summer session that usually is only half of the regular term in duration. 1997 Asian Financial Crisis
The Asian financial crisis was a period of financial crisis that gripped much of East Asia and Southeast Asia beginning in July 1997 and raised fears of a worldwide economic meltdown due to financial contagion. However, the recovery in 1998–1999 was rapid and worries of a meltdown subsided. Surin Hospital
Surin Hospital () is the main hospital of Surin Province, Thailand. It is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the Institute of Medicine of Suranaree University of Technology. History The funding for the construction of a hospital in Surin Province was donated by a monk "Khunaros Silakhan Khanananthamma", the abbot of Jumphon Suthawas Temple in Surin. The foundation stone was laid on 28 March 1949 and the hospital opened on 1 March 1951 as a single-storey wooden building with 50 beds and two full-time doctor. By 1956, an X-ray and Surgical Department was constructed. The hospital was then gradually expanded and became a regional hospital on 29 April 1997. Buriram Hospital () is the main hospital of Buriram Province, Thailand and is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the Institute of Medicine of Suranaree University of Technology and is an affiliated hospital of the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. History Buriram Hospital was first constructed in 1951 as one building with a capacity of 25 beds. It was officially opened on 10 March 1953. On 29 April 1997, the hospital became classified as a regional hospital and expanded to 520 beds. Chaiyaphum Hospital () is the main hospital of Chaiyaphum province, Thailand. It is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. Medical education in Thailand was pioneered by King Chulalongkorn, who founded the country's first medical school called the "School of Medical Practitioners" at Siriraj Hospital in 1889, now the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.
