Inspector-General Of Intelligence And Security (Australia)
The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) is an independent statutory office holder in the Commonwealth of Australia responsible for reviewing the activities of the six intelligence agencies under IGIS jurisdiction. With own motion powers in addition to considering complaints or requests from ministers, IGIS is a key element of the accountability regime for Australia’s intelligence and security agencies. Neil McInnes (1924–2017)
Neil McInnes (6 September 1924 – 28 April 2017) was an Australian intellectual, journalist and senior public servant. His career as a journalist spanned the mid-1940s to the late 1970s in Australia, India and France. His scholarly work focused on the theoretical underpinnings of Marxism as well as the communist parties of Western Europe. In the Australian public service, he occupied several high level posts in intelligence and security from the late 1970s to 2009. Early life and background Neil McInnes was born on 6 September 1924 in Sydney, the fifth of seven children. He was educated at Sydney Boys' High School where he won a number of awards, notably for debating. Vivienne Thom
Vivienne Joyce Thom (born 1960) is an Australian former public servant and current independent consultant and intelligence specialist. From 2010 to 2015, Thom was the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security with oversight over the six agencies of the Australian Intelligence Community. Thom has a doctorate and academic background in chemistry, and after post-doctoral work and teaching in the field, she joined the Australian Public Service as a patent examiner and qualified as a patent attorney. Margaret Ackary Stone (died 1 September 2021) was an Australian judge who served on the Federal Court of Australia. Stone served as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security from August 2015 until her retirement in August 2020. Christopher Jessup is an Australian lawyer who serves as Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security. Between 2006 and 2017, he was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.
