Ingrid Jonker Prize
The Ingrid Jonker Prize is a literary prize for the best debut work of Afrikaans or English poetry. It was instituted in honor of Ingrid Jonker after her death in 1965. The yearly prize, consisting of R10,000 and a medal, is awarded alternately to an Afrikaans or English poet who has published a first volume in the previous two years. Afrikaans
Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. Afrikaans gradually began to develop distinguishing characteristics during the course of the 18th century. Now spoken in South Africa, Namibia and (to a lesser extent) Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, estimates circa 2010 of the total number of Afrikaans speakers range between 15 and 23 million. Most linguists consider Afrikaans to be a partly creole language. An estimated 90 to 95% of the vocabulary is of Dutch origin with adopted words from other languages including German and the Khoisan languages of Southern Africa. Differences with Dutch include a more analytic-type morphology and grammar, and some pronunciations. Megan Hall (poet)
Megan Hall is a South African writer. She was born in 1972 and lives in Cape Town, and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BA Honours degree, following an undergraduate degree in English and Latin. Her first volume of poems, ''Fourth Child'', (Modjaji Books, 2007) won the Ingrid Jonker Prize for 2008. Gert Vlok Nel
Gert Vlok Nel (Beaufort West, 1963) is a South African poet. He studied English, Afrikaans and history at Stellenbosch University and worked as a guide, a bartender and a watchman. He has published one collection of poems, ''Om te lewe is onnatuurlik'' (To live is unnatural), for which he received the Ingrid Jonker Prize in 1994. His countryman Etienne van Heerden praised Vlok Nel as 'one of our finest talents'. ''Om te lewe is onnatuurlik'' was followed by a CD, ''Beaufort Wes se beautiful woorde'', an autobiographical sketch and a full-length show with poems, songs and visual material, which he has performed all over South Africa. Some people say he is a travelling bard with a guitar, comparable to Bob Dylan and the South African troubadour Koos du Plessis. Steve Shapiro (poet)
Steve Shapiro (born 1963) is an American music producer, session musician, and jazz vibraphonist. Biography Steve Shapiro is a veteran NYC studio vibraphonist, composer, and synth programmer. He has recorded or performed with artists such as Steely Dan (''Two Against Nature''), Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Ornette Coleman, Pat Martino, Regina Belle, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, They Might Be Giants, and Spyro Gyra. Shapiro is also an accomplished producer and arranger whose work has appeared in hundreds of television and film projects, and is a long-time producer/arranger for the Walt Disney Company and Pixar Animation Studios, with credits on an array of projects related to over forty feature film releases. He has been a pioneer of using audio and midi technology with the vibraphone since the 1980s, and has developed a unique voice inspired by contemporary electric keyboards. Finuala Dowling
Finuala Dowling (born June 1962) is a South African poet and writer. Biography The seventh of eight children born to radio broadcasters Eve van der Byl and Paddy Dowling, Finuala Dowling obtained an MA in English from the University of Cape Town (UCT), and a D.Litt. from the University of South Africa (UNISA), where she lectured in English for eight years. Her first poetry anthology, ''I Flying'', was published in 2002 and won the Ingrid Jonker Prize. She has also won the Sanlam Award for Poetry and the Olive Schreiner Prize. She won the 2012 M-Net Literary Award (English category) for ''Homemaking for the Down-at-Heart''. With Tessa and Cara Dowling she has set up an entertainment company, Dowling Sisters Productions.
