Accord On Fire And Building Safety In Bangladesh
The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (the Accord) was signed on 24 April 2013. It is a five-year independent, legally binding Global Framework Agreement between global brands, retailers and trade unions designed to build a safe and healthy Bangladeshi Ready Made Garment (RMG) Industry. The agreement was created in the immediate aftermath of the Rana Plaza building collapse that led to the death of more than 1100 people and injured more than 2000. In June 2013, an implementation plan was agreed leading to the incorporation of the Bangladesh Accord Foundation in the Netherlands in October 2013. The International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) was a global union federation of trade unions. As of November 2007, ICEM represented 467 industrial trade unions in 132 countries, claiming a membership of over 20 million workers. History The federation was founded in 1995 in Washington DC when the Miners' International Federation merged with the International Federation of Chemical and General Workers' Unions. In 2000, the small Universal Alliance of Diamond Workers merged into the federation, while in 2007, the World Federation of Industry Workers joined. A global union federation (GUF) is an international federation of national trade unions organizing in specific industry sectors or occupational groups. Historically, such federations in the social democratic tradition described as international trade secretariats (ITS),. while those in the Christian democratic tradition described themselves as international trade federations. Equivalent sectoral bodies linked to the World Federation of Trade Unions described themselves as Trade Union Internationals. Many unions are members of one or more global union federations, relevant to the sectors where they have their members. Within Germany, the role of the trade union IG Metall and Works Councils at Volkswagen is unique, even compared with other large auto firms. Jörg Hofmann (trade Unionist)
Jörg Hofmann (born 3 December 1955) is a German trade union leader. Born in Oppelsbohm, Hofmann studied agriculture, then went to university to study economics. He found work as a researcher at the Institute for Industrial Management at the University of Hohenheim. In 1982, he moved to work for the trade union IG Metall as an expert on new technologies. In 1987, Hofmann became secretary of IG Metall's Stuttgart office, also establishing a new office in Dresden after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1999, he became the union's director for Baden-Württemberg, then vice-president of the union in 2013, and president in 2015. 2013 Savar Building Collapse
The 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse (also referred to as the 2013 Savar building collapse or the Collapse of Rana Plaza) was a structural failure that occurred on 24 April 2013 in the Savar Upazila of Dhaka District, Bangladesh, where an eight-story commercial building called Rana Plaza collapsed. The search for the dead ended on 13 May 2013 with a death toll of 1,134. Approximately 2,500 injured people were rescued from the building. It is considered the deadliest non-deliberate structural failure accident in modern human history, the deadliest garment-factory disaster in history and the deadliest industrial accident in the history of Bangladesh. Berthold Huber
Berthold Huber (born 15 February 1950) is a German former trade union leader. Born in Ulm, Huber was apprenticed as a toolmaker, and worked at Kässbohrer. He joined IG Metall, and in 1978 he became head of the Kässbohrer works council. He began working full-time for the union in 1990, and in 1991 became director of its president's office. In 1998, he became the director of its Baden-Wuerttemberg region, and was elected as the union's vice president in 2003. He became president of the union in 2007, and was also elected as president of the International Metalworkers' Federation, then moving to its successor, the IndustriALL Global Union. In 2012, Huber retired from IG Metall, becoming deputy chair of the board of Volkswagen. The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) was a global union federation of metalworkers' trade unions, founded in Zürich, Switzerland in August 1893. the IMF had more than 200 member organisations in 100 countries, representing a combined membership of 25 million workers. In 1904, the International Secretariat of Foundry Workers merged into the federation, which renamed itself as the "International Metalworkers' Federation". The International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers' Federation (ITGLWF) was a global union federation. In 2005 it had 217 member organizations in 110 countries, representing a combined membership of over 10 million workers. Global Unions or Council of Global Unions is a website, which is jointly owned and managed by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD, and ten global union federations (GUFs).
