Chitrakatha (Hindi: चित्रकथा, Telugu: చిత్రకథ) are comics or graphic novels originating from India published in a number of Indian languages. India has a long tradition of comic readership and themes associated with extensive mythologies and folk-tales have appeared as children's comic books for decades. Indian comics often have large publication. The comic industry was at its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s and during this period popular comics were easily sold more than 500,000 copies over the course of its shelf life of several weeks. Currently, it only sell around 50,000 copies over a similar period. India's once-flourishing comic industry is in sharp decline because of increasing competition from satellite television (children's television channels) and the gaming industry. Hindi
Hindi (Devanāgarī: or , ), or more precisely Modern Standard Hindi (Devanagari: ), is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in the Hindi Belt region encompassing parts of northern, central, eastern, and western India. Hindi has been described as a standardised and Sanskritised register of the Hindustani language, which itself is based primarily on the Khariboli dialect of Delhi and neighbouring areas of North India. Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, is one of the two official languages of the Government of India, along with English. It is an official language in nine states and three union territories and an additional official language in three other states. Bahadur (comics)
Bahadur (meaning The Brave Man) is a comic book superhero published by Indrajal Comics and created by Aabid Surti in 1976. Although it had been initially created by Aabid Surti a few years earlier, it was finally offered to Indrajal Comics. Aabid Surti was at that time freelancing for Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. After he moved on, Jagjit Uppal took over the task. The artwork was illustrated by Govind Brahmania and later by his son, B Pramod. The comics were published in various languages including Hindi, English and Bengali. Besides regular comics, the series was also featured in dailies and weeklies along with other comic heroes. Flash Gordon
Flash Gordon is the protagonist of a space adventure comic strip created and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934, the strip was inspired by, and created to compete with, the already established ''Buck Rogers'' adventure strip. Creation The ''Buck Rogers'' comic strip had been commercially very successful, spawning novelizations and children's toys, and King Features Syndicate decided to create its own science fiction comic strip to compete with it. At first, King Features tried to purchase the rights to the ''John Carter of Mars'' stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs. However, the syndicate was unable to reach an agreement with Burroughs. The Phantom
''The Phantom'' is an American adventure comic strip, first published by Lee Falk in February 1936. The main character, the Phantom, is a fictional costumed crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla. The character has been adapted for television, film and video games. The series began with a daily newspaper strip on February 17, 1936, followed by a color Sunday strip on May 28, 1939; both are still running as of . In 1966, King Features stated that ''The Phantom'' was being published in 583 newspapers worldwide. At its peak, the strip was read by over 100 million people daily. Indrajal Comics
Indrajal Comics was a comic book series in India launched by the publisher of ''The Times of India'', Bennet, Coleman & Co in March 1964. The first 32 issues contained Lee Falk's ''The Phantom'' stories, but thereafter, the title alternated between various King Features characters, including Lee Falk's ''Mandrake'', Alex Raymond's ''Flash Gordon'', ''Rip Kirby'' and ''Phil Corrigan'', Roy Crane's ''Buz Sawyer'', Allen Saunders' '' Mike Nomad,'' ''Kerry Drake,'' and Steve Dowling's ''Garth''. Anant Pai
Anant Pai (17 September 1929 – 24 February 2011), popularly known as Uncle Pai, was an Indian educationalist and a pioneer in Indian comics. He is most famous as the creator of two comic book series viz. ''Amar Chitra Katha'', which retold traditional Indian folk tales, mythological stories, and biographies of historical characters; and ''Tinkle'', a children's anthology. Early life and education Pai was born in Karkala, in what was the erstwhile Madras Presidency of British India on 17 September 1929 to a Konkani-speaking Goud Saraswat Brahmin couple, Venkataraya and Susheela Pai. He lost both his parents at the age of two. Shikari Shambu
Shikari Shambu (''Hunter Shambu'') is an Indian comics character created by Vasant Halbe and Luis Fernandes for the ''Tinkle'' magazine in 1983. Shikari Shambu is one of the characters of Tinkle. Shambu is a cowardly and lazy shikari (hunter) whom the rest of the world perceives as courageous. He always tries to run away from dangerous animals, but due to some stroke of luck always ends up as a hero. He lives with his wife Shanti. In ''The Legend of Shikari Shambu'' (Tinkle Magazine No.573), it was revealed that Shambu, before being called "Shikari" Shambu, fell on a tiger and knocked him out. It was after this incident that he got the name "Shikari" Shambu. He is shown wearing a large pith helmet that completely covers his face and green shorts and a shirt. Suppandi
Suppandi is a comic character who appears in Tinkle comics. Suppandi is typically a village simpleton and is still considered the most famous among the characters appearing in Tinkle. Suppandi made his debut in Tinkle No. 27 in January 1983. Unlike other Tinkle characters, he was not originally conceptualized by the creators of the magazine. He was born out of 3 narrative stories sent by P. Varadarajan from Trichy. The concept was rendered into a comic format in Tinkle studios, with illustrations by one of the famous yesteryear artists, Ram Waeerkar. Suppandi is also shown as an ignoramus but a faithful servant to his masters most of the time. His stupidity or his virtue of being an ignoramus has cost him many a job. Often Suppandi is shown living in big towns and cities. Super Commando Dhruva
Super Commando Dhruva is an Indian superhero appearing in comic books published by Raj Comics. The character, created by writer and illustrator Anupam Sinha, first appeared in GENL #74 ''Pratishodh Ki Jwala'' published in April 1987 and since then, has appeared regularly in many issues published by Raj Comics. ''Super Commando Dhruva'', whose complete name is Dhruva Mehra, is additionally referred to as ''Captain Dhruva'' by the cadets of his Commando Force. Super Commando Dhruva operates in the fictional Indian city of ''Rajnagar''. He is the founder of a fictional government-approved crime-fighter organization ''Commando Force''.
