Independent Candidates, 1987 Ontario Provincial Election
There were several independent candidates in the 1987 provincial election, none of whom were elected. Information about these candidates may be found on this page. Camilo Tiqui ( Parkdale) Tiqui was a perennial candidate for public office in Toronto. He was an intelligence officer in the Philippine military, and moved to Canada in 1976. He later worked for De Havilland as an aircraft technologist. Tiqui was fifty-one years old in 1987, and campaigned in favour of a more equitable system of taxation. He tried to challenge Sergio Marchi for the Liberal nomination in York West in the 1988 federal election, but was ruled ineligible on the grounds that his nomination papers were misfiled. Tiqui expressed concern about overpopulation in the Toronto's Black Creek area during the 1988 campaign. He called for increased multicultural programs in 1991. 1987 Ontario General Election
The 1987 Ontario general election was held on September 10, 1987, to elect members of the 34th Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The governing Ontario Liberal Party, led by Premier David Peterson, was returned to power with their first majority government in half a century, and the second-largest majority government in the province's history. Peterson had successfully managed to govern with a minority in the Legislature by obtaining the co-operation of the Ontario New Democratic Party, led by Bob Rae, in a confidence and supply agreement. It was through the NDP's support that Peterson was able to form a government, even though the Progressive Conservative Party had won a slightly larger number of seats in the previous election. The PC Party, led by Larry Grossman, campaigned on a platform of tax cuts to stimulate the economy. Mario Gentile
Mario Gentile (b. 1948 or 1949-) is a former municipal politician in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He served as a councillor and city controller in North York, and was also a member of the Metropolitan Toronto council. His political career ended with a criminal conviction in 1994. Early life and career Gentile was born in Apulia, in the south east of Italy, and moved to Canada as a young adult. After his arrival there he worked as a welder before moving into selling insurance, building up a strong network of clients in the Italian-Canadian community. He left the insurance business in 1979 to open a travel agency. Municipal politician Gentile was elected to represent North York's second ward in 1976, following a failed bid in 1974. Maria Augimeri ( , ; born ) is a Canadian politician. From 1985 to 2018, she served as a local politician in Toronto, holding office as a school board trustee, and as a council member in North York, Metropolitan Toronto, and on Toronto City Council. Tony Ruprecht
Tony Ruprecht (born December 12, 1942) is a former Canadian politician. His first elected position was as an alderman in the old Toronto City Council, in the late 1970s. He became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1981, and served in premier David Peterson's cabinet as minister without portfolio from 1985 to 1987. Ruprecht represented Toronto's Parkdale and then Davenport constituencies for the Liberal Party of Ontario for 30 years. On July 5, 2011, he announced that he was leaving politics and would not seek re-election in the October 2011 provincial election. Mario Sergio (born July 28, 1940) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 2018 who represented the ridings of Yorkview and York West. He served in cabinet in the government of Kathleen Wynne as a Minister without Portfolio from 2013 to 2016. Background Sergio attended technical school in Italy, and worked as a real estate broker after moving to Canada. He started his own general insurance business in 1961, and started a private real estate brokerage firm in 1968. Scouting
Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement employing the Scout method, a program of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports. Parkdale (federal Electoral District)
Parkdale was a Canadian federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1979. It included the community of Parkdale in the western part of Toronto, Ontario. It was created in 1914 from Toronto West, and continued to exist until 1976 when most of it was merged into Parkdale—High Park with some sections into Trinity.
