Elizabeth Andrews
Elizabeth Andrews OBE (1882–1960) was the first woman organiser of the Labour Party in Wales. Andrews, née Smith, was born into a mining family at Hirwaun in the Cynon Valley, one of eleven children (two of whom died during childhood). She lived in Station Road, Hirwaun, and was obliged to leave school at the age of twelve, in order to help at home. Ten years later, a letter she wrote to the press in support of Evan Roberts gained her some attention, and she joined the women's suffrage movement at about the same time. She was one of three women who gave evidence before the Sankey Commission in 1918, speaking before the House of Lords, along with two miners' wives. As soon as women received the vote, the Labour Party appointed four female organisers, of whom Andrews was one. She campaigned tirelessly for health and education services. Betty Gleadle (11 December 1921 – 24 December 2016), known by the stage name Liz Smith, was an English character actress, known for her roles in BBC sitcoms, including as Annie Brandon in ''I Didn't Know You Cared'' (1975–1979), the sisters Bette and Belle in '' 2point4 Children'' (1991–1999), Letitia Cropley in ''The Vicar of Dibley'' (1994–1996) and Norma Jean Speakman ("Nana") in ''The Royle Family'' (1998–2000, 2006). Elizabeth Joyce Smith
Elizabeth Joyce Smith (born 1956) is an Australian Anglican priest and hymnist. She has published three collections of hymns, and several of her hymns have been included in the ecumenical hymnal '' Together in Song.'' Ordained a deacon in the Anglican Church in Australia in 1987, Smith became a priest in 1993. She earned a PhD from the Pacific School of Religion, where she focused on feminist hermeneutics and liturgical studies. Her doctoral thesis was published in 1999, with the title ''Bearing Fruit in Due Season: Feminist Hermeneutics and the Bible in Worship''. She has served on the Liturgy Commission for the Anglican Church of Australia since 1997. In 2018, she was commissioned to write a hymn for the installation of Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy. A large collection of her correspondence, notebooks, photographs and other papers at the Drexel University College of Medicine Legacy Center offers rich first-hand sources on women's medical education in the 1910s, and on women's medical careers in the first half of the twentieth century. Early life and education Elizabeth E. Cisney was born in Nossville, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Henry Cisney and Margaret Kelly Cisney. She trained as a teacher at the State Normal School in California, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1911. Betty Smith (musician)
Betty Smith (6 July 1929 – 21 January 2011) was an English jazz saxophonist and singer. She began playing the saxophone at the age of nine and left school six years later to perform with the travelling all-female septet Archie's Juveniles. She performed in the Middle East in 1947 and flew to Germany the following year. Smith and her husband Jack Peberdy joined Freddy Randall's band in 1950 before leaving seven years later to form their own quintet. Her time with Randall saw her travel the United States with some success in the country's hit parade. Her newly formed quintet found regular work and Smith later performed with the Ted Heath Orchestra and alongside Kenny Baker.
