Independent Mental Health Advocacy
Independent mental health advocacy, IMHA, is advocacy for someone being treated, possibly Involuntary treatment, involuntarily, for a mental disorder provided by someone not involved in the treatment. IMHA can help a service user understand and exercise their Patients' rights, rights and ensure their views and preferences are expressed. Advocacy seeks to address unequal power relations between Mental health professional, mental health professionals and those using their services. Those who provide such advocacy are called Independent mental health advocates, IMHA. IMHA complement the Medical ethics#Beneficence, best interest advocacy where others make decisions based on what they think is in a service user, such as a Involuntary commitment, psychiatric inpatient, best interest with representational advocacy which provides support for the patients Medical ethics#Autonomy, autonomy, their ability to have a role in decisions made about them. Advocacy is an Action (philosophy), activity by an individual or advocacy group, group that aims to influence decision making, decisions within political, economic, and social institutions. Advocacy includes activities and publications to influence public policy, laws and budgets by using facts, their relationships, the media, and messaging to educate government officials and the public. Advocacy can include many activities that a person or organization undertakes, including media campaigns, public speaking, commissioning and publishing research.
