The market also provides an opportunity for listeners to meet the founders of record labels and some of the artists. History The Independent Label Market was first set up in May 2011 on Berwick Street, London, United Kingdom, and has since returned twice a year to Old Spitalfields Market. The market is held in conjunction with the London Brewers Market. The market also launched in Brooklyn, New york in October 2011, Silverlake, Los Angeles in November 2012, Toronto in June 2013,. and Glasgow in October 2013. Simon Raymonde
Simon Philip Raymonde (born Simon Philip Pomerance; 3 April 1962, in London) is an English musician and record producer. He is the son of the late arranger and composer Ivor Raymonde. He is best known as the bass guitarist and keyboard player with the Scottish band Cocteau Twins from 1983 to 1997. Raymonde now runs the Bella Union record label. Acid Jazz Records
Acid Jazz Records is a record label based in East London formed by Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller in 1987. The label is the namesake of the acid-jazz subgenre of jazz music for which it is most famously known for producing. Background The label's first signing was singer-songwriter Rob Gallagher's band, Galliano, which released the label's first single "Frederick Lies Still" in 1987, which features a sample of "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. Richard Russell (born March 18, 1971) is an English record producer and the owner of British record label XL Recordings. Career XL Recordings was founded in 1989 by Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes to release dance music. Richard Russell joined XL as an A & R scout in 1991. In 1992, Russell released a single titled " The Bouncer" as part of a duo named Kicks Like a Mule. ''The Guardian'' described the song as rave music that was "knocked into shape in about five hours" which "crossed over from pirate radio to reach number seven in the charts." Young (formerly known as Young Turks) is a British independent record label that sits in the Beggars Group of labels launched by Caius Pawson in 2006. It has grown from an imprint of XL Recordings into a successful and influential label now partnered with XL and operates across a range of genres. The label's current roster includes The xx, FKA twigs, Sampha, Jamie xx, Koreless and Kamasi Washington.
