Inchanga
Inchanga is a village in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, approximately halfway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Schools Inchanga has several schools, including Rietvallei Combined School, Siphesihle High School, Inchanga Primary School, Zifikele High School MbaliYezwe Primary School and KwaXimba Combined School. History Inchanga was noted as the location of a tall rail viaduct that was poorly constructed and required extremely slow crossing (10km/h), and if the wind speed exceeded 15km/h the passengers were made to walk across the bridge, after which the train followed. An alternate route around the ravine made the bridge obsolete in 1892, and a train station was built nearby in 1895. A hotel was built near the train station in 1903, but 20 years later a new rail line was built some distance away and business suffered. Umgeni Steam Railway
The Umgeni Steam Railway is a gauge heritage railway at Inchanga, near Durban. The Durban to Pietermaritzburg line was built in the 1880s; it runs through a long tunnel at Drummond built in 1878, which is probably the oldest tunnel in use today in South Africa In 1982, a small Dubs locomotive was donated by the Illovo Sugar company to local enthusiasts; this was the start of the preservation group. A Class-3BR locomotive is used every month; it was built by North British Locomotive Company in February 1912. The coaches used were built between 1908 and 1953, with most being built in the 1930s. Excursion Trains On the last weekend of every month excursion trains are run from Inchanga to Bothas Hill because of flood damage between Bothas Hill and Kloof. eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality created in 2000, that includes the city of Durban, South Africa and surrounding towns. eThekwini is one of the 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
