''In Melbourne Today'' was an early Australian television series, which aired in two versions in the 1950s, on Melbourne station GTV-9. It was Australia's first breakfast television series. The first version aired on Saturdays at 7:30AM, and ran from 26 October 1957 to 5 April 1958, with episodes running for 3 hours. At the time, the other Melbourne stations usually began their broadcasting day in the afternoon, and as such ''In Melbourne Today'' was an early experiment in morning programming, pre-dating Sydney station ATN-7's October 1958 experiment. However, it would appear viewers weren't ready to watch TV at 7:30AM, as after the series ended GTV-9 stopped offering regular morning programs for several years. Regulars in this version included host Geoff Corke, along with the Tune Twisters, newsreader Eric Pearce, Eric Welch (sports), Shirley Radford, Arlene Forrest, and Bill McCormack. The ''Herald Sun'' is a conservative daily tabloid newspaper based in Melbourne, Australia, published by The Herald and Weekly Times, a subsidiary of News Corp Australia, itself a subsidiary of the Murdoch owned News Corp. Ernest William Sigley (2 September 1938 – 15 August 2021) was an Australian television host, comedian, variety performer, radio presenter and singer. Known as a pioneer of radio and television in Australian, he was often styled as a "little Aussie battler" with a larrikin sense of humour. Sigley started his career in radio, before becoming a presenter of TV programs and was best known for his self-titled program ''The Ernie Sigley Show'' and ''Saturday Night Live'' as well as original host of game show ''Wheel of Fortune'', after presenting talk shows with his frequent co-presenter Denise Drysdale in the late 80s and early 90s, he returned to presenting radio broadcasts, until retiring in 2009. Denise Anne Christina Drysdale (born 5 December 1948) is an Australian television presenter, variety entertainer, actress, singer, dancer and comedian. ''In Melbourne Tonight'', also known as ''IMT'', was a highly popular nightly Logie award-winning Australian variety television show produced at GTV-9 Melbourne from 6 May 1957 to 1970. Overview Graham Kennedy was the show's main host and star attraction, but other presenters were often called on to present the show on certain nights. ''In Melbourne Tonight'' had as many as 50 different presenters over its 13 years on air. The format of the show was inspired by the American ''Tonight Show'' on NBC, but Kennedy's exuberant charisma was the key to the success of ''IMT''. The show originally had its own self-titled theme song, written by ''IMT'' first band leader, Lee Gallagher, but for most of its run, it adopted the tune of '' Gee, But You're Swell'', written by Abel Baer and Charles Tobias in 1936. Geoff Corke
Cuthbert Geoffrey Corke (30 December 1934 - 1 May 1993) was an Australian radio and television presenter. He became one of the first people to appear on television in Melbourne when he introduced GTV-9's test transmissions in 1956. Early life Corke was born at St George's Hospital in the Melbourne suburb of Kew on 30 December 1934. At the age of three months, he relocated with his parents to Papua New Guinea where his father managed a rubber plantation near Port Moresby. He and his parents returned to Melbourne when they were evacuated back to Australia from Papua New Guinea after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. After returning to Melbourne, Corke began attending South Auburn Primary School and then Scotch College. Career Corke developed a strong interest in the media in his youth.
