Impact Craters Of Sweden
In early 2018 there were eight known impact craters in Sweden. They range in age from 90 mya to 470 mya, and in diameter from 1 km to 52 km. Six of them are exposed, that is they are visible at the surface, in the natural landscape, although their nature and origin might need to be pointed out to the untrained layman. Impact Craters
An impact crater is a circular depression in the surface of a solid astronomical object formed by the hypervelocity impact of a smaller object. In contrast to volcanic craters, which result from explosion or internal collapse, impact craters typically have raised rims and floors that are lower in elevation than the surrounding terrain. Lunar impact craters range from microscopic craters on lunar rocks returned by the Apollo Program and small, simple, bowl-shaped depressions in the lunar regolith to large, complex, multi-ringed impact basins. Dellen
Dellen is a lake system in the province of Hälsingland, Sweden. It consists of two lakes, ''Northern Dellen'' and ''Southern Dellen'', appreciated among fly-fishermen for their population of brown trout. Southern Dellen has a surface area of 52 km2 and a water volume of 1,226 million m³. Northern Dellen has an area of 82 km2 and a water volume of 1,489 million m³. The two lakes are only separated by a short channel, and it is therefore disputed whether they should be counted as one or two lakes. The two lakes together have a total area of 130 km2, which would be the 18th largest Swedish lake. Hummeln Structure
The Hummeln structure was confirmed, in 2015, as an impact crater in Småland province, Sweden. It is a wide depression within Lake Hummeln and is estimated to have formed between 470 and 443 Ma ago, during the Ordovician. Lockne is a meteorite crater, located approximately south of the city of Östersund in northern Sweden. Målingen was confirmed as an impact crater in 2014. It is located near the city of Östersund in northern Sweden. Mien is a lake in southern Sweden, 12 km (7.5 mi) southwest of the town of Tingsryd. The lake is formed within a meteorite crater. Siljan Ring
The Siljan Ring ( sv, Siljansringen) is a prehistoric impact crater in Dalarna, central Sweden. It is one of the 15 largest known impact craters on Earth and the largest in Europe, with a diameter of about . The impact that created the Siljan Ring occurred when a meteorite collided with the Earth's surface during the Devonian period, about 376.8 ± 1.7 Ma. Ordovician Meteor Event
The Ordovician meteor event was a dramatic increase in the rate at which L chondrite meteorites fell to Earth during the Middle Ordovician period, about 467.5±0.28 million years ago. This is indicated by abundant fossil L chondrite meteorites in a quarry in Sweden and enhanced concentrations of ordinary chondritic chromite grains in sedimentary rocks from this time. This temporary increase in the impact rate was most likely caused by the destruction of the L chondrite parent body 468 ± 0.3 million years ago having scattered fragments into Earth-crossing orbits, a chronology which is also supported by shock ages in numerous L chondrite meteorites that fall to Earth today. It has been speculated that this influx contributed to, or possibly even instigated, the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, although this has been questioned.
