Impact Craters Of Sweden
In early 2018 there were eight known impact craters in Sweden. They range in age from 90 mya to 470 mya, and in diameter from 1 km to 52 km. Six of them are exposed, that is they are visible at the surface, in the natural landscape, although their nature and origin might need to be pointed out to the untrained layman. Impact Craters
An impact crater is a circular depression in the surface of a solid astronomical object formed by the hypervelocity impact of a smaller object. In contrast to volcanic craters, which result from explosion or internal collapse, impact craters typically have raised rims and floors that are lower in elevation than the surrounding terrain. Lunar impact craters range from microscopic craters on lunar rocks returned by the Apollo Program and small, simple, bowl-shaped depressions in the lunar regolith to large, complex, multi-ringed impact basins. Meteor Crater is a well-known example of a small impact crater on Earth. Impact craters are the dominant geographic features on many solid Solar System objects including the Moon, Mercury, Callisto, Ganymede and most small moons and asteroids. On other planets and moons that experience more active surface geological processes, such as Earth, Venus, Europa, Io and Titan, visible impact craters are less common because they become eroded, ... Dellen
Dellen is a lake system in the province of Hälsingland, Sweden. It consists of two lakes, ''Northern Dellen'' and ''Southern Dellen'', appreciated among fly-fishermen for their population of brown trout. Southern Dellen has a surface area of 52 km2 and a water volume of 1,226 million m³. Northern Dellen has an area of 82 km2 and a water volume of 1,489 million m³. The two lakes are only separated by a short channel, and it is therefore disputed whether they should be counted as one or two lakes. The two lakes together have a total area of 130 km2, which would be the 18th largest Swedish lake. The vaguely circular lake system was formed by an impact crater 89 million years ago, placing the impact in the Late Cretaceous. The resulting impact crater measures about 19 kilometers in diameter. It has resulted in the area containing the rock Dellenite (a rock intermediate in composition between Rhyolite and Dacite), which has become the provincial rock. Asteroid 770 ... Hummeln Structure
The Hummeln structure was confirmed, in 2015, as an impact crater in Småland province, Sweden. It is a wide depression within Lake Hummeln and is estimated to have formed between 470 and 443 Ma ago, during the Ordovician. Description The depression was first described in 1826 but was considered to be the result of volcanism or tectonics.L. Ferrière, C. Alwmark, S. Holm-Alwmark, J. Ormö, H. Leroux, and E. Sturkell (2015)The Hummeln Structure (Sweden) – Impact Origin Confirmed And Its Link To The L-Chondrite Parent Body Break-Up Event 46th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference In the 1960s, mapping of the lake topography gave the first hints of an impact event. More conclusive evidence was found recently when scientists from Lund University, while trying to get to nearby Siljan crater, found shocked quartz around the lake.Daniel Kelly (2015)Space Rock Created Sweden’s Hummeln Lake Lake Scientist, Mar 2015. Lockne Crater
Lockne is a meteorite crater, located approximately south of the city of Östersund in northern Sweden. It has been suggested that it is a doublet with the nearby smaller Målingen Crater, apart.Raul Rincon (2014BBC News: "Ancient Earth hammered by double space impact", 18 March 2014 accessed 19 March 2014. Computer simulations suggest that the asteroid that created the Lockne crater was some in diameter, and the one that carved out Målingen crater was about across. It is in diameter and the age is estimated, based on accompanying chitinozoan microfossils, to be 458 million years (Late Ordovician The Ordovician ( ) is a geologic period and system, the second of six periods of the Paleozoic Era. The Ordovician spans 41.6 million years from the end of the Cambrian Period million years ago (Mya) to the start of the Silurian Period Mya. ...). The crater is exposed at the surface. Målingen Crater
Målingen was confirmed as an impact crater in 2014. It is located near the city of Östersund in northern Sweden. It is "probable" that it formed simultaneously with the nearby Lockne crater.Raul Rincon (2014)BBC News: "Ancient Earth hammered by double space impact", 18 March 2014 accessed 19 March 2014. Computer simulations suggest the asteroid pieces that created the Lockne and Målingen craters were some 600 meters and 250 meters in diameter, respectively. Målingen is 1 km in diameter and its age is estimated, using chitinozoan microfossils, which were also found in Lockne, to be 458 million years (Late Ordovician The Ordovician ( ) is a geologic period and system, the second of six periods of the Paleozoic Era. Mien (lake)
Mien is a lake in southern Sweden, 12 km (7.5 mi) southwest of the town of Tingsryd. The lake is formed within a meteorite crater Crater may refer to: Landforms *Impact crater, a depression caused by two celestial bodies impacting each other, such as a meteorite hitting a planet *Explosion crater, a hole formed in the ground produced by an explosion near or below the surfac .... The eroded crater is marked by a 5.5-km (3.4-mi) diameter circular lake (Lake Mien). The original crater rim is estimated to have been about 9 km in diameter before erosion. Its age is estimated to be 121.0 ± 2.3 million years (Early Cretaceous). Siljan Ring
The Siljan Ring ( sv, Siljansringen) is a prehistoric impact crater in Dalarna, central Sweden. It is one of the 15 largest known impact craters on Earth and the largest in Europe, with a diameter of about . The impact that created the Siljan Ring occurred when a meteorite collided with the Earth's surface during the Devonian period, about 376.8 ± 1.7 Ma. This coincides around the first Devonian extinction, the Kellwasser Event or Late Frasnian extinction at 376.1 Ma ± 1.6 Ma. The effects of the impact can clearly be seen in the bedrock in the area. The Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian sedimentary rocks deformed by the impact are rich in fossils. The area around the Siljan Ring has been the site of recent prospecting for oil and natural gas, though none of the projects has so far been commercially viable. There are large deposits of lead and zinc near Boda at the eastern edge of the Ring. There are several lakes in the vicinity, the largest of which is Siljan on the south-so ... Ordovician Meteor Event
The Ordovician meteor event was a dramatic increase in the rate at which L chondrite meteorites fell to Earth during the Middle Ordovician period, about 467.5±0.28 million years ago. This is indicated by abundant fossil L chondrite meteorites in a quarry in Sweden and enhanced concentrations of ordinary chondritic chromite grains in sedimentary rocks from this time. This temporary increase in the impact rate was most likely caused by the destruction of the L chondrite parent body 468 ± 0.3 million years ago having scattered fragments into Earth-crossing orbits, a chronology which is also supported by shock ages in numerous L chondrite meteorites that fall to Earth today. It has been speculated that this influx contributed to, or possibly even instigated, the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, although this has been questioned.
