Iluska Pereira da Cunha Simonsen (22 February 1941 – 28 March 2017) was a Brazilian chess player who held the ICCF title of Lady International Correspondence Chess Grand Master (2000). Biography In the mid of 1970s Iluska Pereira da Cunha Simonsen was one of the leading Brazilian chess female players. She has participated in many Brazilian Women's Chess Championships. In 1978, in Brasília Iluska Pereira da Cunha Simonsen participated in the Women's World Chess Championship South American Zonal Tournament and shared 5th-6th place with Julia Arias. Iluska Pereira da Cunha Simonsen played for Brazil in the Women's Chess Olympiad: * In 1978, at second board in the 8th Chess Olympiad (women) in Buenos Aires (+4, =5, -0). The 23rd Chess Olympiad ( es, La 23a Olimpíada de ajedrez), organized by FIDE and comprising an openAlthough commonly referred to as the ''men's division'', this section is open to both male and female players. and a women's tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place between October 25 and November 12, 1978, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After the boycott two years earlier, the Eastern Bloc countries were back, including the Soviet team who, as usual, were huge favourites——but in the end they had to settle for the silver medal. Mário Henrique Simonsen
Mário Henrique Simonsen (c. 1935 – 9 February 1997) was a Brazilian economist, who served as Brazil's finance minister from 1974 to 1979. Simonsen was appointed Brazil's finance minister by President Ernesto Geisel with instructions to reduce the country's runaway inflation rate. Despite Simonsen's efforts, the official inflation rate had risen to 40% ''per annum'' in 1979 and he was shifted to Planning Minister. He was succeeded by Antonio Delfim Netto, with whom he had an uneasy relationship due to the latter's inclination to increase borrowing, and hence inflation. Simonsen resigned from Cabinet in 1980 and became a director of Citicorp, a position he held until 1995 when he was forced by ill-health to retire. World Correspondence Chess Championship
The World Correspondence Chess Championship determines the World Champion in correspondence chess. Men and women of any age are eligible to contest the title. The official World Correspondence Chess Championship is managed by the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). The world championship comprises four stages: Preliminaries, Semi-Finals, Candidates' Tournament, and Final. ICCF tournament rules define which players can access each stage. The first-, second- and third-placed finishers from the previous Final, and the first- and second-placed finishers from the Candidates' Tournaments have access to the World Correspondence Chess Championship Final. Correspondence Chess
Correspondence chess is chess played by various forms of long-distance correspondence, traditionally through the postal system. Today it is usually played through a correspondence chess server, a public internet chess forum, or email. Less common methods that have been employed include fax, homing pigeon and phone. It is in contrast to (OTB) chess, where the players sit at a chessboard at the same time, or play each other in real time via the internet. Correspondence chess allows people or clubs who are geographically distant to play one another without meeting in person. These distant relationships are just one of the many distinct appeals of correspondence chess. Women's Chess Olympiad
The Women's Chess Olympiad is an event held by FIDE (the International Chess Federation) since 1957 (every two years since 1972), where national women's teams compete at chess for gold, silver and bronze medals. Since 1976 the Women's Chess Olympiad has been incorporated within Chess Olympiad events, with simultaneous women's and open tournaments. The Soviet Union has won it the most often: 11 times. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, China have won the event six times, Georgia – four times, Russia – three times and Ukraine – two times. It has also been won by Hungary led by three Polgár sisters (twice) and Israeli team fully composed of Soviet-born players (once in 1976 when it was boycotted by the Eastern Bloc). Julia Lebel-Arias
Julia Lebel-Arias ( Arias, born 10 March 1946) is an Argentina-born chess player and Woman International Master (WIM, 1985) who represented Argentina (until 1982), France (from 1982 till 2001) and Monaco (from 2002). She is a four-times winner of the Argentine Women's Chess Championship and a three-times winner of the French Women's Chess Championship. Biography From the end of 1970s to the early 1980s, Lebel-Arias was one of the leading chess players in Argentina. She won the Argentine Women's Chess Championships in four consecutive years: 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977. After moving to France, she three times won French Women's Chess Championship: 1983, 1986, and 1990. In 1985, she was awarded the FIDE Woman International Master (WIM) title.
