Iluileq
Iluileq (named 'Ilivilik' in old maps) is an uninhabited island in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. History Wilhelm August Graah (1793–1863) met groups of Southeast-Greenland Inuit on the island during his 1828–30 expedition. He was impressed by some of the women, finding them more beautiful and cleaner compared with the West Greenlandic women he had known. In June 1870 Iluileq was the place where the crew of the ''Hansa'', the supply ship of the Second German North Polar Expedition was finally able to land after their ship became separated from the ''Germania'', drifted with the ice pack and sank. The crew drifted on the sea ice southward and after nearly eleven months finally reached Iluileq by boat. They found no Inuit on the island. From there they followed the shore southwards until they reached the Moravian ''Herrnhut'' mission at Friedrichsthal (modern Narsaq Kujalleq) near Cape Farewell, from where they got back to Germany on a Danish ship. Iluileq Fjord
Iluileq ( da, Danell Fjord) is a fjord in the King Frederick VI Coast, Kujalleq municipality, southern Greenland.''Prostar Sailing Directions 2005 Greenland and Iceland Enroute'', p. 100 This fjord was named by Wilhelm August Graah after David Danell, a Dutchman who made three expeditions to Greenland in 1652-54 sent by King Frederick III of Denmark. Geography Iluileq Fjord extends in a roughly east–west direction for about 55 km between Kangerluluk to the north and Paatusoq to the south, the latter being much closer and running parallel to it. To the east the fjord opens into the North Atlantic Ocean where the large Iluileq island lies on the northern side of its mouth rising to a height of . The fjord has a large active glacier at its head and its inner section is almost always encumbered with ice floes. Kangerluk Fjord
Kangerluk, also known as ''Kangerluluarak'', is a fjord in the King Frederick VI Coast, Kujalleq municipality, southern Greenland. History In Kangerluk there is a small cove at a place named Saqqap Nuua (Serkertnua) where Lieutenant Wilhelm August Graah was detained seventeen days in 1829 during his East Coast expedition owing to the difficult ice and weather conditions to the north. King Frederick VI Coast
King Frederick VI Coast ( da, Kong Frederik VI Kyst) is a major geographic division of Greenland. It comprises the coastal area of Southeastern Greenland in Sermersooq and Kujalleq municipalities fronting the Irminger Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by King Christian IX Land on the north and the Greenland Ice Sheet to the west. Named after King Frederick VI of Denmark-Norway, the coast stretches for about south of the Arctic Circle. It is characterized by a succession of short fjords, steep mountains and small coastal islands. Second German North Polar Expedition
The German North Polar Expeditions were a short series of mid-19th century German expeditions to the Arctic. The aim was to explore the North Pole region and to brand the newly united, Prussian-led German Empire as a great power. In 1866, German geographer August Petermann wrote a pamphlet strongly advocating German participation in the international quest for the North Pole, which stimulated a German expedition. First German North Polar Expedition The first expedition took place in the summer of 1868 and was led by Carl Koldewey on the vessel ''Grönland''. The expedition explored some hitherto unknown coastal tracts of northeastern Spitsbergen, but did otherwise not lead to any new scientific knowledge. Narsaq Kujalleq
Narsarmijit, formerly Narsaq Kujalleq and Frederiksdal, is a settlement in southern Greenland. It is located in the Kujalleq municipality near Cape Thorvaldsen. Its population was 66 in 2020. There has been a slow but steady pattern of emigration since the late 1950s. Cape Farewell ( kl, Nunap Isua; da, Kap Farvel) is a headland on the southern shore of Egger Island, Nunap Isua Archipelago, Greenland. As the southernmost point of the country, it is one of the important landmarks of Greenland.
