Ilkka Pastinen
Ilkka Olavi Pastinen (17March 192812January 2018) was a Finnish ambassador who also served as Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations. Pastinen was born in Turku. His parents were warehousekeeper Martti Mikael Pastinen and Ilmi Saga Karlström. He graduated from Åbo Akademi University in 1950. He also studied from 1950 to 1951 in Paris at the Instituts d'études politiques. Pastine served as Assistant to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1952 to 1955; Assistant to the Embassy of Stockholm, 1955–1957; and the Second Division of the United Nations Permanent Representation to New York, 1957–1959. He was then Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1960 to 1962; First Secretary of the Finnish Embassy in Beijing, 1962–1964; Deputy Head of the Department for Foreign Affairs, 1964–1966; and the Embassy of London, 1966–1969. Deputy Secretary-General Of The United Nations
The deputy secretary-general of the United Nations is the deputy to the secretary-general of the United Nations. The office was created to handle many of the administrative responsibilities of the secretary-general, help manage Secretariat operations, and ensure coherence of activities and programs. The post was formally established by the General Assembly at the end of 1997. Amina J. Mohammed of Nigeria was named as deputy secretary-general by then secretary-general-designate António Guterres. United Nations Secretary-General Selection, 1971
A United Nations Secretary-General selection was held in 1971 to succeed U Thant, who was stepping down after two full terms. Three candidates received enough votes in the Security Council to be selected Secretary-General: Carlos Ortiz de Rozas of Argentina, Kurt Waldheim of Austria, and Max Jakobson of Finland. However, all of the frontrunners were vetoed in the first two rounds of voting. In the third round, Waldheim accidentally escaped a triple-veto when three permanent members failed to coordinate their votes and all abstained. As a result, Kurt Waldheim was selected Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term starting 1 January 1972. Kalevi Sorsa
Taisto Kalevi Sorsa (21 December 1930 – 16 January 2004) was a Finnish politician who served as Prime Minister of Finland three times: 1972–1975, 1977–1979 and 1982–1987. At the time of his death he still held the record for most days of incumbency as prime minister. He was also a long-time leader of the Social Democratic Party of Finland. Early years Taisto Kalevi Sorsa was born on 21 December 1930 in Keuruu. Sorsa's surname literally means " anatid" in Finnish. Sorsa attended school in Jyväskylä and Lappeenranta. At the age of 18, Sorsa's involvement with the SDP started in Lappeenranta. Keijo Korhonen (politician)
Keijo Tero Korhonen (23 February 1934 – 6 June 2022) was a Finnish politician, ambassador, and professor. During his political career, he served as the Finnish foreign minister and Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations. He was an unsuccessful candidate for President of Finland in 1994. He was also a professor at the University of Helsinki and an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona. Political career Korhonen was the Finnish foreign minister between 1976 and 1977 representing the Centre Party.
