Iceland At The 1912 Summer Olympics
Iceland competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Olympic historians treat Iceland's results separate from those of Denmark despite Iceland's lack of independence at the time. Athletics A single athlete represented Iceland in athletics in the nation's debut at the sport and the Olympics. Halldórsson ran in the 100 metres, finishing fourth in his first round heat and not advancing to the semifinals. Ranks given are within that athlete's heat for running events. Wrestling Greco-Roman Iceland's Olympic debut also included a wrestler. Pétursson advanced to the fifth round of the light heavyweight competition on the strength of a 3–2 record (making Iceland one of a very few countries to have a winning record in wrestling). The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland ( is, Íþrótta- og Ólympíusamband Íslands) (abbreviated ÍSÍ) is the National Olympic Committee representing Iceland, and the highest authority for sporting activity in the country. Wrestling At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's Greco-Roman Light Heavyweight
The Greco-Roman light heavyweight competition at the 1912 Summer Olympics was part of the wrestling programme. The competition used a form of double-elimination tournament. Rather than using the brackets that are now standard for double-elimination contests (and which assure that each match is between two competitors with the same number of losses), each wrestler drew a number. Each man would face off against the wrestler with the next number, provided he had not already faced that wrestler and that the wrestler was not from the same nation as him (unless this was necessary to avoid byes). When only three wrestlers remain (the medalists), the double-elimination halts and a special final round is used to determine the order of the medals. Sigurjón Pétursson
Sigurjón Pétursson (9 March 1888 – 3 May 1955) was an Icelandic wrestler. He competed in the light heavyweight event at the 1912 Summer Olympics. The men's 100 metres was a track and field athletics event held as part of the Athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fifth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The competition was held on 6 July 1912 and on 7 July 1912.
