Ian Rankin (rugby Union)
Ian Rankin is a Scottish former rugby union player and now coach. He is also a former President of the Scottish Rugby Union. He has coached various clubs, among them:- Caledonia Reds, Edinburgh Rugby, Scotland 'A', Scotland U21, Scotland Club XV and Dundee HSFP. Rugby Union career Amateur career He played for Edinburgh Wanderers and Howe of Fife. He won the Howe of Fife Sevens while with the Cupar club. Coaching career He began his coaching career at Kirkcaldy before coaching the North and Midlands district side. On professionalism this side became Caledonia Reds and Rankin coached the professional side. He led the Caledonia Reds to their first ever outright Scottish Inter-District Championship title - as the amateur or professional side - in 1996-97. Edinburgh Wanderers
Edinburgh Wanderers is a former rugby union club, founded in 1868. It was latterly a tenant of the Scottish Rugby Union, playing home fixtures at Murrayfield Stadium for nearly 75 years. In 1997 it merged with Murrayfield RFC to form Murrayfield Wanderers. Formation The rugby club was formed in 1868. The club was initially known as St. Andrew's Wanderers, as it was formed by St. Andrew's University graduates based in Edinburgh. The 1996–97 Scottish Inter-District Championship rugby union Scottish Inter-District Championship was the first between the Scottish districts as professional teams. Caledonia Reds won this first professional tournament. Indeed, it was the northern Scottish district's first and only outright title in their history, since the Scottish Inter-District Championship began in 1953-54. The Reds previously competed as the amateur district North and Midlands. Glasgow and the Border Reivers also qualified for the Heineken Cup for the next season. The Scottish Inter-District Championship is a rugby union competition between regional sides in Scotland. Established in 1953, the tournament went through several formats. The Scottish Rugby Union confirmed in January 2023 that the Scottish Inter-District Championship would return for the 2022-23 season, starting in May 2023. The Inter-District Championship will be an amateur championship with players selected outwith the professional United Rugby Championship and Super 6 leagues. The President of the Scottish Rugby Union is the figurehead of rugby union in Scotland. Origin In 1873, and directly after the Scotland versus England international match, representatives from eight Scottish rugby union sides came together in Glasgow at the Glasgow Academy in Elmbank Street. They decided to form an organisation to develop the sport in Scotland. It was initially called the Scottish Football Union, but changed its name to the Scottish Rugby Union to give clarity from association football.
