Ian Marsh (footballer)
Ian Marsh (23 October 1955 – 28 May 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). After sporadic appearances in his first two seasons, Marsh was a regular on the wing for Essendon from 1978 to 1980. He was unable to play at Essendon in 1981 due to heart problems and had to have open heart surgery in July that year. The following month he returned to training but despite making the reserves he could not break back into the VFL side. Marsh however continued to play district football at Aberfeldie and spent the 1985 season with South Bendigo, his last year before retiring. North Launceston Football Club
The North Launceston Football Club, nicknamed ''The Bombers'', is an Australian rules football club based in Launceston, Tasmania. Australia. Since 2009 they have played in the newly formed Tasmanian State League. History The club started as "Railway Football Club" in 1893 and were known as "Essendon" in the 1898 season. It fielded a team in the NTFA Junior Competition for three years, and began playing in the senior competition in 1896. Its first season under the North Launceston name was in 1899 when it played in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association. The club has remained in the top tier of state competition ever since, playing in the Tasmanian Football League and Northern Tasmanian Football League upon the competition restructures in the state. The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. Aberfeldie Football Club
Aberfeldie Sports Club is an Australian rules football and cricket club located 9 km north-west of Melbourne in the suburb of Aberfeldie which entered the Essendon District Football League in 1948. History The ASC was formed in 1974 and wholly incorporated in 1981. Originally known as 'The Gorillas', the football team wore a navy blue guernsey with an ACC monogram in reference to the Aberfeldie Community Centre which began in 1944 and evolved into the humble beginnings of the football section. Recently, club historian Gary Wicking has pored over vintage newspapers on microfilm dating back over a hundred years and has determined that there was documented evidence of fore-runners of the current club as early as 1893 for both football and cricket in the district. The South Bendigo Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Bloods'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the city of Bendigo, Victoria. The club teams currently compete in the Bendigo Football Netball League. 1979 Perth State Of Origin Carnival
The 1979 Perth State of Origin Carnival was the 20th Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football competition. It was the first carnival to take place under the State of Origin format. All of the Section One finals were played on Subiaco Oval, in October. Western Australia won the final, defeating Victoria. WA's captain, Brian Peake won the Tassie Medal as the tournament's best player. Results Section One Section Two The ACT, coached by Kevin Delmenico, had only two players with VFL experience in their team - captain Kevin Neale and Fitzroy's Michael Conlan.
