Open University
The Open University (OU) is a British public research university and the largest university in the United Kingdom by number of students. The majority of the OU's undergraduate students are based in the United Kingdom and principally study off-campus; many of its courses (both undergraduate and postgraduate) can also be studied anywhere in the world. There are also a number of full-time postgraduate research students based on the 48-hectare university campus in Milton Keynes, where they use the OU facilities for research, as well as more than 1,000 members of academic and research staff and over 2,500 administrative, operational and support staff. The OU was established in 1969 and was initially based at Alexandra Palace, north London, using the television studios and editing facilities which had been vacated by the BBC. The first students enrolled in January 1971. The university administration is now based at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, in Buckinghamshire, but has administratio ...

Initial Entry Training
United States Army Basic Combat Training (BCT) is the recruit training program of the United States Army, for service in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, or the Army National Guard. Some trainees attend basic combat training along with their advanced individual training (AIT) at one place, referred to as One Station Unit Training (OSUT). A United States Army infantry recruit should expect a more intense, physically demanding basic training located at Fort Benning, Georgia through One Station Unit Training program that is 22 weeks in duration. Other occupations also learn basic warrior tasks and skills and small unit tactics, but tend to focus on more of a balanced approach. These trainees receive basic combat training at different installations including Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; or Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Basic training is designed to be highly intense and challenging. The challenge comes as much from the difficulty of physical training as it does ...

It Ends Tonight
"It Ends Tonight" is a song by American rock band the All-American Rejects, released as the third and final single from their second studio album ''Move Along'' on September 17, 2006. Background and composition "It Ends Tonight" was written by Nick Wheeler and Tyson Ritter. Along with the title track, it was one of the last songs written for ''Move Along'' and as revealed by the band in an interview on ''Soundstage'' is about a "dude" rather than addressed to a female love interest. The song utilizes a string section, with an arrangement by composer Deborah Lurie. Reception Critical reception The song received mostly positive reviews from music critics. About.com commented: It Ends Tonight' will provide a suitably dreamy sounding late evening mood for the band's eager fans, but it fails to reach the distinctiveness of their previous hits 'Dirty Little Secret' and 'Move Along'. The lyrics kick off in intriguing fashion with 'Your subtleties / They strangle me,' but that is as goo ...

Tryptophol
Tryptophol is an aromatic alcohol that induces sleep in humans. It is found in wine as a secondary product of ethanol fermentation. It was first described by Felix Ehrlich in 1912. It is also produced by the trypanosomal parasite in sleeping sickness. It forms in the liver as a side-effect of disulfiram treatment. Natural occurrences Tryptophol can be found in ''Pinus sylvestris'' needles or seeds. It is produced by the trypanosomal parasite (''Trypanosoma brucei'') in sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis). Tryptophol is found in wine and beer as a secondary product of ethanol fermentation (a product also known as congener) by ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae''. It is also an autoantibiotic produced by the fungus ''Candida albicans. It can also be isolated from the marine sponge ''Ircinia spiculosa''. Metabolism Biosynthesis It was first described by Felix Ehrlich in 1912. Ehrlich demonstrated that yeast attacks the natural amino acids essentially by splitting off carbon dio ...

British Rail Class 802
The British Rail Class 802 is a type of high speed bi-mode multiple-unit passenger train designed and produced by the Japanese manufacturer Hitachi Rail. It has been operated by Great Western Railway, TransPennine Express, and Hull Trains; each of these train operating companies have given its own units a unique brand; Great Western Railway's units are branded ''Intercity Express Trains'' (IETs), TransPennine Express units are branded ''Nova 1s'' and Hull Trains' units are branded ''Paragons''. The Class 802 is based on the design of the Hitachi A-train, being a member of the Hitachi AT300 product family. It is broadly similar to the preceding Class 800, the primary difference between the two being the installation of more powerful engines and enlarged fuel tanks on the Class 802 to mitigate for their intended usage on lengthier unelectrified stretches of railway. Their introduction by the Great Western Railway facilitated not only the replacement of aging Intercity 125 high s ...

British Rail Class 800
The British Rail Class 800 ''Intercity Express Train'' or ''Azuma'' is a type of bi-mode multiple unit train built by Hitachi Rail for Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway. The type uses electric motors powered from overhead electric wires for traction, but also has diesel generators to enable trains to operate on unelectrified track. It is a part of the Hitachi AT300 product family. The Class 800 was produced under the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) as a replacement for the Intercity 125 and Intercity 225 fleets of high speed trains. The trains were manufactured by Hitachi between 2014 and 2018, assembly being performed at the Hitachi Newton Aycliffe facility, alongside the related Class 801, from bodyshells shipped from the Kasado plant in Japan; no body construction takes place in the UK. As well as resembling the Class 801, the units are also very similar to the Class 802 units, which have uprated diesel engines and larger fuel tanks. The respectiv ...

Interest Equalization Tax
Interest Equalization Tax was a domestic tax measure implemented by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in July 1963. It was meant to make it less profitable for U.S. investors to invest abroad by taxing the purchase of foreign securities. The design of the tax was to reduce the balance-of-payment deficit. Originally intended to be a temporary tax, it lasted until 1974. Purpose The purpose of the tax was to decrease the balance of payments deficit in the US. This was achieved conceptually by making investments in foreign securities less appealing. By increasing the price of the security, investors will buy fewer of them, all else equal. With fewer domestic investors purchasing foreign securities, capital outflows will be lower, thereby reducing the balance-of-payments deficit. The equation for the balance of payments is: : \text = \text + \text \pm \text \, The identity for the capital account is: : \begin \mbox & = \mbox \\ & - \mbox \\ \end So when capital outflows decrease, ...

Interval Exchange Transformation
In mathematics, an interval exchange transformation is a kind of dynamical system that generalises circle rotation. The phase space consists of the unit interval, and the transformation acts by cutting the interval into several subintervals, and then permuting these subintervals. They arise naturally in the study of polygonal billiards and in area-preserving flows. Formal definition Let n > 0 and let \pi be a permutation on 1, \dots, n. Consider a vector \lambda = (\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n) of positive real numbers (the widths of the subintervals), satisfying :\sum_^n \lambda_i = 1. Define a map T_: ,1rightarrow ,1 called the interval exchange transformation associated with the pair (\pi,\lambda) as follows. For 1 \leq i \leq n let :a_i = \sum_ \lambda_j \quad \text \quad a'_i = \sum_ \lambda_. Then for x \in ,1/math>, define : T_(x) = x - a_i + a'_i if x lies in the subinterval translation, and it rearranges these subintervals so that the subinterval at position i ...

Impulse Excitation Technique
The impulse excitation technique (IET) is a non-destructive material characterization technique to determine the elastic properties and internal friction of a material of interest. It measures the resonant frequencies in order to calculate the Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio and internal friction of predefined shapes like rectangular bars, cylindrical rods and disc shaped samples. The measurements can be performed at room temperature or at elevated temperatures (up to 1700 Â°C) under different atmospheres. The measurement principle is based on tapping the sample with a small projectile and recording the induced vibration signal with a piezoelectric sensor, microphone, laser vibrometer or accelerometer. To optimize the results a microphone or a laser vibrometer can be used as there is no contact between the test-piece and the sensor. Laser vibrometers are preferred to measure signals in vacuum. Afterwards, the acquired vibration signal in the time domain is conv ...
