There are ruins of the ancient capital of Abkhazia, Anacopia, on the mountain top. On the mountain northern slope New Athos Cave is located. New Athos Cave
The New Athos Cave ( ab, Афон Ҿыцтәи аҳаҧы; ka, ახალი ათონის მღვიმე; russian: Новоафонская Пещера) also Novoafonskaya, Novy Afon Cave, or New Afon Cave is a karst cave in the Iverian Mountain in Abkhazia (Georgia (country), Georgia) near the city of New Athos. Overview The abyss on a slope of the Iverian Mountain was known for ages, referred to as the "Bottomless Pit". It was explored in 1961 by an expedition of four: Zurab Tatashidze, Arsen Okrojanashvili, Boris Gergedava, and Givi Smyr. Sukhumi
Sukhumi (russian: Суху́м(и), ) or Sokhumi ( ka, სოხუმი, ), also known by its Abkhaz name Aqwa ( ab, Аҟәа, ''Aqwa''), is a city in a wide bay on the Black Sea's eastern coast. It is both the capital and largest city of the Republic of Abkhazia, which has controlled it since the Abkhazia war in 1992–93. However, internationally Abkhazia is considered part of Georgia. New Athos Cave Railway ( ab, Афон Ҿыц аҳаҧытә метро; Georgian: ახალი ათონის მღვიმური რკინიგზა, russian: Новоафонская пещерная железная дорога), also known as New Athos Subway, is an underground electric railroad serving the New Athos Cave, in the town of New Athos, Abkhazia. Route The line is a single track and electrified narrow gauge railway with a third rail. Opened in 1975, it has a length of and three stations. It starts at the entrance of the caves, nearby Psyrtscha station of the Abkhazian railway. From the Entrance Gate station, it reaches two cave halls: Apsny Hall (or Abkhazia) and Anakopea Hall. Apsny station serves to lead the tourists at the beginnings of the show cave, and Anakopea to bring them back to the entrance gate, at the end of the tour.
