St Nedelya Church Assault
The St Nedelya Church assault was a terrorist attack on St Nedelya Church in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was carried out on 16 April 1925, when a group of the Military Organisation of the Bulgarian Communist Party directed and supplied by the Soviet Military Intelligence blew up the church's roof during the funeral service of General Konstantin Georgiev, who had been killed in a previous communist assault on 14 April. 150 people, mainly from the country's political and military elite, were killed in the attack and around 500 bystander believers, who attended the liturgy, were injured. Ivan Ivanovich Popov (; born 30 January 1975) is a former Russian Ground Forces major general who commanded the 58th Combined Arms Army until he was dismissed in July 2023. Early life and education Popov was born on 30 January 1975 in a small farming khutor in the Don steppes, part of Danilovsky District, Volgograd Oblast. In his youth Popov aspired to follow in his father's footsteps as a border guard, seeking to enter the Alma-Ata Higher Border Command School, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union Popov applied to and was accepted to the Moscow Higher Military Command School in 1992. The Tripartite Pact, also known as the Berlin Pact, was an agreement between Germany, Italy, and Japan signed in Berlin on 27 September 1940 by, respectively, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Galeazzo Ciano and Saburō Kurusu. It was a defensive military alliance that was eventually joined by Hungary (20 November 1940), Romania (23 November 1940), Bulgaria (1 March 1941) and Yugoslavia (25 March 1941) as well as by the German client state of Slovakia (24 November 1940). Ivan Popov (born 20 March 1990) is a Russian chess player. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2007. In 2006, he won the "Vanya Somov Memorial – Young Stars of the World" tournament in Kirishi, Russia, scoring 8½/11 points, half point ahead of Ian Nepomniachtchi. Popov became Russian junior champion in 2007. In the same year, he also won the under-18 division of the World Youth Chess Championships and was runner-up in the World Junior Chess Championship. In 2012, Popov won the Moscow Chess Championship. The following year, he competed in the FIDE World Cup, where he was knocked out in the first round by Markus Ragger.
