Ivan Asen Cove
Ivan Asen Cove ( bg, залив Иван Асен, ‘Zaliv Ivan Asen’ \'za-liv i-'van a-'sen\) is the 1.16 km wide cove on Osmar Strait indenting for 800 m the southeast coast of Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, and entered northeast of Ivan Asen Point. Its head is fed by Dragoman Glacier. The feature takes its name from the adjacent Ivan Asen Point. Osmar Strait ( bg, проток Осмар, ‘Protok Osmar’ \'pro-tok os-'mar\) is the wide strait in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica between Smith Island to the northwest and Low Island to the southeast. South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands with a total area of . They lie about north of the Antarctic Peninsula, and between southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands. By the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the islands' sovereignty is neither recognized nor disputed by the signatories and they are free for use by any signatory for non-military purposes. The islands have been claimed by the United Kingdom since 1908 and as part of the British Antarctic Territory since 1962. Ivan Asen Point
Ivan Asen Point ( bg, Нос Иван Асен, ‘Nos Ivan Asen’ \'nos i-'van a-'sen\) is a narrow rocky point projecting 680 m into Osmar Strait from the southeast coast of Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It forms the southwest side of the entrance to Ivan Asen Cove and the northeast side of the entrance to Yarebitsa Cove, and separates the glacier termini of Dragoman Glacier to the north and Armira Glacier to the south. The point is named after Czar Ivan Asen II of Bulgaria, 1218-1241 AD. Dragoman Glacier ( bg, ледник Драгоман, lednik Dragoman, ) is a long glacier on Smith Island, South Shetland Islands draining the southeast slopes of Imeon Range southeast of Zavet Saddle and south of the summit Mount Foster. It is situated southeast of Bistra Glacier, southwest of Landreth Glacier and northeast of Armira Glacier, and flows southeastward into Ivan Asen Cove, Osmar Strait. Bulgarian early mapping in 2009. Antarctic Place-names Commission
The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. The Commission approves Bulgarian place names in Antarctica, which are formally given by the President of the Republic according to the Bulgarian Constitution (Art. 98) and the established international practice.
