Itu-t Study Group 15
The ITU-T Study Group 15 (SG15) 'Transport' is a standardization committee of ITU-T concerned with networks, technologies and infrastructures for transport, access and home. It responsible for standards such as GPON, G.fast, etc. Administratively, SG15 is a statutory meeting of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), which creates the ITU-T Study Groups and appoints their management teams. The secretariat is provided by the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (under Director Chaesub Lee). The goal of SG15 is to produce recommendations (international standards) for networks. A standards organization, standards body, standards developing organization (SDO), or standards setting organization (SSO) is an organization whose primary function is developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending, reissuing, interpreting, or otherwise contributing to the usefulness of technical standards to those who employ them. World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly
The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) is the governing conference of the ITU Standardization Sector (ITU-T), one of the three world conferences of the International Telecommunication Union, and as such, the United Nations system. The quadrennial conference decides the working methods for ITU-T for the next Study Period. It also creates the Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG) and the ITU-T Study Groups (such as ITU-T Study Group 13) and elects their management teams. GPON
ITU-T G.984 is the series of standards for implementing a gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON). It is commonly used to implement the link to the customer (the ''last kilometre'', or ''last mile'') of fibre-to-the-premises ( FTTP) services. GPON puts requirements on the optical medium and the hardware used to access it, and defines the manner in which Ethernet frames are converted to an optical signal, as well as the parameters of that signal. The bandwidth of the single connection between the OLT ( optical line termination) and the ONTs ( optical network terminals) is 2.4Gbit/s down, 1.2Gbit/s up, or rarely symmetric 2.4Gbit/s, shared between up to 128 ONTs using a time-division multiple access (TDMA) protocol, which the standard defines. Chaesub Lee
Chaesub Lee PhD ( Korean: 이재섭) is a telecommunication executive who served as the Director of ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, the permanent secretariat of the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) from 2015 until 2022. Early career In 1986 Lee started working at Korea Telecom, where he worked for 17 years. Following this, Lee worked at Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) for eight years. ITU involvement Lee was the Chairman of the ITU-T Focus Group Next-Generation Networks (FG-NGN), as well as the Vice-Chairman of the ITU-T Focus Group IPTV.
